Grimm Tattoo in Kansas City

We headed in to Kansas City last weekend for an antique market in the West Bottoms district...on the way to the venue I noticed a cool tattoo parlor with a fellow sitting out front and decided to stop and engage him in conversation. I discovered that he was the proprietor of this establishment and that he was a 4th generation tattoo artist. We got a tour of his establishment and he graciously allowed me to take a few picutures of him during our visit. This image was captured with a recently acquired Yashica 44 A, on long expired Kodacolor 200 CB/GB 127 fllm. I'm hoping to get back to this establishment to take some more pictures of the inside of the business...it is truly a museum to the tattoo arts.

Dirty Window at West Bottoms

Spent the day antiquing in the West Bottom District of Kansas City yesterday. It is First Friday weekend so all the antique stores and junk shops were open for business. This a really cool event and there are probably a dozen or more places to hit during the weekend. Just be prepared to do some walking...particularly up stairs. The antique shops are in 100 plus year old brick buildings that were formerly warehouses or other industrial facilities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I shot this image with my Yashica LM TLR on JCH400 film. I was trying to expose for the buildings in the background but I think I was just a bit low with the composition. This is a pretty typical view from most of the buildings in the West Bottoms and I think this particular scene was on the 4th floor of this building...a lot of stairs for sure. Bennett Springs State Park (found film)

I went to an Estate Sale in Independence, MO this past weekend and picked up several nice vintage film cameras. One, a Yashica 44A had an exposed roll of Kodacolor 200 CB/GB film in it. I developed the film with CineStill's C41 kit and got 5 good images on the roll. After a little research on Google Image, I discovered that this image was taken at Bennett Springs State Park near Lebanon, MO.

The Estate Sale agent told me that these cameras were from the estate of Dr. Donald and Barbara Potts of Independence, MO. Dr. Potts was a prominent local Medical Doctor and his wife Barbara was the first and only female Mayor of Independence, MO. She served two terms between 1982 and 1990. I roughly determined from a couple of cars in one of the images that these pictures were taken sometime in the mid-1980s.

Mother Daughter Love

Spent this past Saturday shooting film at City Market in Kansas City. I'm getting better at approaching random strangers to take their picture...most really don't mind, but during this outing I actually had two rejections. This image from this session really stood out for me...the young lady leaning in to mom and her demure expression really speaks to the bond between mother and daughter. This image captured with my Kodak Retina IIIc on JCH Streetpan 400 film. Developed with D76 at 1:1.

Wedding Photos in KC

We were out Saturday exploring Kansas City and we ventured to one of our favorite spots, the WWI museum. As we were walking up to the overlook we noticed a wedding party having pictures taken at the museum. I was hoping to get up to them before they finished but unfortunately they wrapped things up just as we were getting to the spot they were shooting. I readied my Retina IIIc as they walked down the ramp and shot one frame. I wasn't expecting much from the image, but was pleasantly surprised with the result when I developed the film. The bride and her Maid of Honor seem so happy...I think the groom is the gentleman in the middle of the three men and he seems happy too. I wish them all the best in their union and hope that the joy they are experiencing in the moment carries through during their entire marriage. Retina IIIc on JCH 400 film. There's The Rub. City Market, KCMO

I had a wonderful day with a couple of film cameras Sunday at City Market in KCMO. I typically find it challenging to approach strangers to ask to take their picture, but I've found that people with dogs are easy to approach and usually don't mind. This young lady was very proud of her pooch and I must say he was very well behaved in an environment with so many people and a lot of other dogs. Skateboarder at City Market

This fellow approached me while we were at City Market in Kansas City last Sunday and was interested in my camera. He is also a film photographer and we had a nice conversation about film cameras, film types, scanning and editing techniques, etc. He has a wonderful film portfolio on Instagram @cutthemonitors. He was really happy about how this image turned out. Minolta Autocord LMX on Lucky SHD 400 film. Developed with D76 at 1:1.

City Market KCMO

Spent the morning yesterday walking around City Market in KCMO with a couple of film cameras. I got some nice images...weather was perfect, albeit a bit on the bright side. This fella and his puppy were enjoying the day too and he was getting the pup used to people and other dogs. Captured with a recently acquired Minolta Autocord LMX TLR on Lucky SHD 400 film. Gotta Love Horses, Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival 2025

The St. Martin's Parish Sheriff Department's horse patrol was in attendance at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival this past weekend. As you would expect they attracted quite a bit of attention. Here a father and his young daughter admire these beautiful creatures. A good time was had by all at the festival this year. We're looking forward to our next visit to Breaux Bridge. Captured with my Yashica EM TLR on JCH 400 film. Developed with D76 at 1:1 dilution.

Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival 2025

Drove from Northeast Kansas to Breaux Bridge Louisiana Friday and spent the day at the Crawfish Festival Saturday. It was a wonderful day filled with great people, good food, and my favorite amazing Cajun music and Cajun dancing. Here a couple competing in the Cajun dance contest...if I remember correctly they finished 2nd...though I thought they should have won. Image captured with my Contax RX 35mm camera on Foma 400 film. Washing Day in Lawrence by J Kilgo

Washing Day in Lawrence

I encountered this interesting fellow at the car wash in Lawrence, KS a week or so back. He was drying and rubbing down his bike and had the music going and was dancing while he cleaned. I pulled in next to him and asked about his bike...he was very proud of his machine and he graciously let me photograph him sitting on it. We talked for a few more minutes and then got back to cleaning.

This was captured using my Agfa Isollette III folding camera...one of my favorite medium format cameras. I was very disappointed to realize when I developed the film that my beautiful Isolette III has developed several pin holes in the bellows. You can see the effects of the light leaks all over this image. I still like how this turned out, because it seems to capture the character of this fellow and his pride in his bike. Looks like now I'll have to get out the liquid electrical tape to repair the pin hold leaks. Captured with Fuji Pro 400 film, developed with CineStill's C41 kit.

Chickens in the Barnyard

Featured here are some of our chickens and in the background our barn cat Percy. The chickens are up in the pen now for the rest of the summer since we've started planting our garden.

I find most of my vintage cameras at estate sales...also if I find film at sales I buy it no matter the brand, type, or age. This image was taken with a recently acquired Argus C3 Match Matic that was manufactured in 1963. I used expired (06/2006) Kodak Gold 200 that I also acquired at a recent estate sale.

I paid a bit more for this camera than I typically would for a C3, but it was in such nice condition and I didn't have a Match Matic in my collection. This is my 5th C3, and it just seems that I can't resist when I find them at sales.

I am always pleasantly surprised at how sharp the images taken with a C3 are, and I was not disappointed here. It takes some getting used to the Match Matic's exposure system and this camera didn't have the exposure meter that goes with this model, so there was a bit of guessing on the settings. The expired Gold 200 actually performed better than expected...just a bit of separation in the shadows, but overall a nice result.

Engine 811

Photograph of A.T. & S. F. steam engine 811 on display in Atchison, KS. This engine manufactured in Atchison is a favorite subject of my film captures. This particular shot was captured with my 100 plus year old Improved Conley Magazine camera. This really cool box camera was originally designed to shoot glass plate negatives and has a surprisingly effect falling plate system that allows up to 12 images using metal plate holders that are advanced with an ingenious system actuated with a dial on the right side of the camera. There is a wire spring on the back door of the camera that moves each plate into position after the exposed image is dropped to the bottom of the camera with the dial. Image captured using Foma 200 film and developed with 510 Pyro at 1:100.

1984 Chrysler Lebaron Woody Convertible

Who remembers the 84 Lebaron Woody Convertible? I was shocked to encounter this immaculate survivor in Lawrence, KS recently. The K car platform was credited with saving the Chrysler Motor Company in the early 80s but I just can't see myself driving one, even after all these years. I'm a car guy and do have to admire how this car has survived in such nice condition 40 plus years down the road. Captured with my Mamiya C33 using Rollei RPX 25 film. Developed with D76 at 1:1.

Downtown Kansas City

I was in Kansas City shooting some film a few weeks ago and as I was setting up this young couple with their daughter walked past me. I was able to get the camera in action in time to capture them as they moved to the other side of the street. I was setting up to shoot the Catholic Center building at the end of Baltimore Street and got a nice bonus with this young family. Captured with my Improved Conley Magazine camera on Foma 100 film. Developed using 510 Pyro at 1:100.

Doc Soaking up the early Spring sun

Doc is such a gentle soul...he really enjoys laying out near our pond soaking up the sun on warm early spring days. His half brother Skip is never far away and in fact is just outside the frame checking out what I'm up to. Image captured with a recently acquired Mamiya C33 TLR on expired (2006) Fuji 160 film. Film developed with CineStill's C41 kit. I was very pleased with how these images turned out with this camera, particularly considering how old this film is.

Down at the Pond

Spring is slowly showing itself here in Kansas...I'm out every few days trying to record the slow transition from winter to spring with some of my film cameras. Here down at our pond using one of my Six-20 Brownie Junior box cameras. It was mostly overcast this day but there were some subtle breaks in the cloud cover to show some much wanted blue sky. This wonderful camera manufactured between 1934 to 1942 did a nice job recording the scene. I used a Box Topper platform to steady the camera and I was really pleased with how this turned out. Image captured on respooled (120 to 620) Kodak Gold 200 film, developed with CineStill's C41 kit.
