Mevagissey harbour at low tide

Mevagissey is a beautiful fishing village on the south coast of Cornwall. Its inner harbour, seen here, dates from the 1760s, as do a number of the cottages overlooking it from the hillside. There is also an outer harbour, dating from the end of the 1800s. The fleet of fishing boats at Mevagissey is the second largest in Cornwall. Most of them are day boats, going out and returning with their catch the same day.

Low tide in the inner harbour, Mevagissey, Cornwall

When we were in Cornwall recently we called in to Mevagissey to meet up with one of Judy's sons, and have dinner with him. He only lives five minutes from the inner harbour, and I thought it best to make myself scarce for an hour or two, and let mum and her son have some time to themselves. I always think the inner harbour, dating from the mid-1700s, looks better with the tide in. But on this occasion I had no option but to make the best of it, with all the fishing boats sitting on the mud.

This is the sheltered inner harbour at the charming fishing village of Mevagissey on the south coast of Cornwall. This harbour was constructed in the 1760s and built on the site of an ancient medieval quay. The outer harbour dates from the late 19th century. Mevagissey has the second largest fishing fleet - virtually all day boats - in Cornwall.

Fishermen's cottages at Mevagissey, Cornwall

The inner harbour, which is overlooked by fishermen's cottages on the hillside at Mevagissey on the south coast of Cornwall, dates from the 1760s. The fishing fleet at Mevagissey is second in size only to the one at Newlyn in the far west of Cornwall. Most boats are day boats, going out and returning with their catch the same day. The majority of the old cottages date from the same period and are listed buildings.
