There are three Flowering Dogwood trees a little further away that are later blooming and are looking really excellent right now. The bracts on these three trees are also more reddish in tones than most of the other trees in this area.

The flowers (in the center) are individually small, inconspicuous, and hermaphroditic, with four, greenish-yellow petals (not bracts) 4 mm (0.16 in) long. Around 20 flowers are produced in a dense, rounded, umbel-shaped inflorescence, 1–2 cm (0.39–0.79 in) in diameter. This central flower head is surrounded by four conspicuous large white, pink or red bracts (not petals).

The actual flowers are grouped in the small dome shape in the center and are surrounded by the large bracts.

While along the Blue Ridge Parkway and roadside pullout with a view looking to the northeast. This is at the Chimney Rock Mountain Overlook with a view to a nearby Flowering Dogwood and then a more distant view of ridges and peaks.
