Puck's Hut, Benmore Botanic Garden

Great place even if you just want a different walk for the dog and a wee picnic. Entry isn't free though so competing against the likes of Kilmun Arboretum and Puck's Glen but still well worth a visit and leave plenty of time, this is not a half hour quick stopover. If you do it in that time you haven't seen most of it or you are an Olympic athlete.

Follow the link below to red about the hut designed and built in memory of a great early environmentalist, Isaac Bayley Balfour.

The Victorian Fernery

As it says, The Victorian Fernery, Benmore Botanic Garden, Dunoon, Cowal, Argyll & Bute, Scotland.

Not sure why, but I didn't take any shots inside apart from on my phone but it's a fascinating building. Benmore, as I said in my last post is well worth a visit and if you don't like gardens don't be put off by the word in the title. We didn't visit much of the formal garden this time at all and managed to spend 4 hours or more there. Great place to walk the dog.

The Fernery, Benmore Botanic Garden

Lovely place and an old building within the gardens, those Victorians were quite ingenious at times. I have a few phone shots of the interior which I might add if anyone is interested but this is just another interesting feature of Benmore.

Nice to sit a while and contemplate in the fresh warm autumn air. Also the sharp eyed will notice a kangaroo in the shot. No it's not a bush safari but a metal silhouette of which there are a few dotted around Benmore. "What's that you say Skippy?"

Chilean Viewpoint Refuge

No, this wasn't taken in Chile but this is an attempt to recreate some of that Andean scenery, and a pretty good attempt at that, by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Scotland

Having been pleasantly surprised by a visit to Benmore Botanic Garden a few years ago, that I won in a competition, I remember thinking the relatively newly planted hillside and viewpoint was quite atmospheric and would be worth future visits. I would look forward to seeing how the different varieties of monkey puzzle were progressing having grown up in a house that had a fine specimen in the garden and fond memories of this. The refuge would also be a good picnic place, especially if the weather wasn't too good.

Well a recent visit after a few years didn't disappoint. We made our way up to the viewpoint and had our sandwiches and then had a very leisurely walk back down through the different settings.

Years ago if my parents were going somewhere and asked if I wanted to go with them, without thinking, the answer would usually be no, especially if the name of the place to be visited included the word garden. Who wants to visit a garden? Boring!

Maybe I have become my parents but Benmore has so much more to offer than a garden. Yes, part of it is a garden but most of it is a network of trails and follies with some real gems hidden amongst it set on a hillside near Dunoon. Great place just for a walk but also to take your dog for a walk, ours loved it and the network of paths are well maintained. maybe they should rename it Benmore Trails and more people might visit.

Home also to an avenue of Giant Redwoods and a Victorian Fernery plus numerous little huts/follies.

Inside the Benmore Fernery

Not the largest but a wonderfully peaceful place. I could sit in here for hours reading a book. Benmore Botanic Gardens, by Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland.

Hopeman, Moray, Scotland. There's a golf course just above here too. Lovely place and a great walk is to be found along the shore.

Ruthven Barracks by NickD58

Ruthven Barracks

Finally made it although being so close to the A9 I'm not sure why I have never been here before. Obviously news must have spread of our visit as we had a welcome committee on arrival, very friendly too.

Beside Kingussie, Inverness-shire, Scotland.

From Historic Scotland:

Ruthven Barracks were built by George II’s government in the early 1700s after the failed Jacobite uprising of 1715. The troops stationed there were to maintain law and order and enforce the Disarming Act of 1716.

The barracks saw action twice. A 300-strong Jacobite attack failed to take the barracks in 1745, but a more heavily-armed attack the next year forced the barracks’ surrender. The Jacobites rallied here after their defeat at Culloden before conceding.

A sad ending to a so called romantic period and dreams of Scotland reasserting itself as an independent nation, wonder what happened to that?
