There were, in all honesty, more exotic things to point the camera at on Wednesday 23rd April 2025, but class 70s are an interesting subject I suppose. They certainly haven't been blessed with good looks, but do have a certain something about them, maybe... That'll probably be the flared radiators, which betray the GE PowerHaul genetics. Anyway, this is 70015, plodding along the WCML at Charnock Richard, between Preston and Wigan, with the 12:53 (6Z26) from Shap Summit to Basford Hall.

Making a welcome substitution for a class 66/6 locomotive, Freightliner orange liveried 59102 Village of Chantry is seen rolling through the Avon valley as it approaches Avoncliff with the 6C79 09:58 Avonmouth to Whatley train of empty aggregate box wagons. The train is just about to pass underneath the Kennet & Avon canal which is at a higher level behind the trees seen above the train. It is nice to have this reasonably regular morning working along this route. With my original plan to go after the morning DCR stone working in tatters following the failure of the locomotive on the Tytherington branch, this was my back-up option.

Freightliner Heavy Haul 66510 has just arrived at the junction at Ravenstruther in a heavy downpour. Two photographers were attempting to shelter from the rain amongst some scrappy trees on the side of the road while trying to keep their cameras dry and capture the action. The train will wait for the signal before pushing back to the loading point to the right of frame. August 2, 2011.

ADDITIONAL NOTES.
Taken 20 years after the previous image, almost to the day (see previous image for details or below to compare).
Former RH Roadstone JGA hopper no.17316 was one of 23 from the original build of 27 to be sold to Freightliner Heavy Haul in 2006. The wagons were overhauled and repainted into Freightliner's green livery and I was under the impression they were never lettered with the company name (since proved otherwise see comments and linked image below). They were obtained for a new flow of clay sand which is a waste product from the china clay industry. The initial flows ran from Burngullow in Cornwall to Bow in East London but FLHH won further contracts for sand to Neasden in West London and the Bow traffic later switched to Angerstein Wharf in South London. When this traffic ceased the wagons found further use with FLHH in South Wales working out of Neath Abbey Wharf to destinations around London.
When I took this picture in Kingmoor Yard I never noted why they had arrived so far north, I suspect they were for a trial load of lime or gritstone out of either Shap Blue Quarry or Shap Beck Quarry but equally could have been used as brake force runners. To my knowledge the remaining vehicles are now stored or scrapped.
Running in multiple as part of the revised Mendip Rail train plan in operation since the December 2023 timetable change, Freightliner G&W orange liveried 66415 You Are Never Alone is seen leading green liveried classmate 66517 eastwards through Manningford Bruce with a 6A50 10:26 Whatley Quarry to Hanwell Bridge Loop train of loaded aggregate hopper wagons. The train will be split into portions upon its arrival in order to serve aggregate terminals in the Home Counties. The lead locomotive was formerly operated by DRS before being transferred to Freightliner. It was named in conjunction with Samaritans in 2019. 18/04/24.
The bright orange Genesee & Wyoming-inspired Freightliner colours contrast with the lush green environment of Lakenham in South Norwich as 66623 Lest We Forget powers an empty rake of hoppers working 6Z45 1336 Trowse Yard Redland Siding to Tunstead Sidings, having arrived with a full trainload in the morning. The River Tas can be seen in the foreground. Although Freightliner-hauled aggregate services are a regular sight on the Breckland line, seeing one of the orange locos provides some variety from the usual green traction,

With the moon visible above the Vale of Pewsey, 59202 Pride of Ferrybridge makes it way westwards through Patney with 6V31, the 09:06 Wembley Reception Sidings to Merehead Quarry train consisting of assorted empty aggregate box wagons. A new train plan was introduced for the Mendip aggregate traffic at the commencement of the timetable change which has seen a recast of services to and from the Mendip quarries. The entire class 59/2 fleet are now painted in the Freightliner G&W orange livery
