After scoring the long sought Conrail Shared Assetts street running on Delmorr Ave and checking out the doomed Silverliner III I headed over to the corridor for a quick succession of four trains before heading north.
Here at MP 58.7 on Amtrak's NYP Line (New York to Philadelphia) the old Pennsylvania Railroad MORRIS Tower offers a nice trackside prop. Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1941 and equipped with a 47 lever US&S Model 14 elctro-pneumatic switch machine it controlled all the switches in the massive interlocking where the four mains separated and the double track Trenton Cutoff diverged in the middle then flew over headed west to Morrisville Yard and then 44 miles east to a connection with the Harrisburg Line east of Downingtown.
Built by the PRR in 1892 as a bypass around Philadelphia for freight traffic between New York and the Harrisburg area it was electrified like the rest of the New York-Washington mainline and Harrisburg Line and wa s a double track heavy haul freight route into the Conrail era. But when through freights were removed from the NEC the Trenton cutoff lost its purpose and other than some through traffic to Morrisville Yard from the west (via a connection with the old Reading) it is just the domain of local freights now and long bereft of its catenary.
But a hint of past glory remains with the wires still live over the two tracks diverging on to the west end of the cutoff thanks to New Jersey Transit which owns about 1.5 miles of the Morrisville Line main from here west. The commuter operator built an 18 track yard and a maintaince and inspection building on land once occupied by a 40 track bowl in the former hump yard. All that was abandoned by Conrail decades ago as through freight traffic shifted off the NEC and gateways changed and local industries (such as the massive US Steel Fairless Works only three miles from the yard) were shuttered.
A portion of the freight yard is still flat switched and operated by CSAO along with a small NS intermodal facility at the west end. But the days of dozens of long freights hustling west to Enola behind E44s are but a memory....
