Vorig jaar kwam ik ongepland kort in Besançon terecht. Ongepland?

The Giant Ginko Tree is the slanted one of the left.
Shukkeien Garden
Skukkeien translates as "Shrunken Garden" and is the traditional Japanese gardening technique of translating larger natural features, such as mountains and forests, down into garden-scale replicas. The garden was started in 1610, just after the completion of the Hiroshima Castle, and was designed by the tea master Ueda Soko.
It was destroyed in the atomic blast on Aug 6, 1945. Because it was known to the locals as a peaceful place, a large number gathered there immediately after the bombing, though they died before they could receive medical treatment and were interred in the garden. It was turned into a temporary reception area for war victims.
The garden was rebuilt, starting in 1949 and reopened to the public in 1950 with several trees and one of the bridges that survived the bombing.

Fresh growth on the 大銀杏 (Giant Ginko Tree). This is the only tree that survived the bombing and is estimated to be more than 200 years old.
