The TL is one of 7 ordered by the LCC London Fire Brigade under the Home Office Grant Aided scheme in 1940, then NFS formed 1941. An eighth identical TL was supplied in 1941 pre NFS. The NFS fitted independent pumps behind the driving position at a later stage. After WWII 4 of the 8 TLs were moved by the NFS outside the London area, London retained GGK 943/944/946/947, these passed to London FB in 1948.*

This particular one was moved by the NFS to Oldham. Reference picture there:

*GGK943 was being restored and up for sale 2018; GGK944 was scrapped several years ago after being outside since its withdrawal in the 60s; GGK946 was exported to the States 30ish years ago as a full working vehicle; GGK947 may be in Suffolk. There is no info on GGK941/945/948. There was no GGK942

GMC appliance at Leigh. Lancashire also bought forty Ford D series appliances, as was the largest buyer in the UK.

The D1617 was the first to have the Perkins V8 diesel engine, and was based on a standard Ford 16 ton chassis, previously badged as a D1000.

Ford SVO then offered the D1317, which was a specially engineered chassis with the V8 in a 13 ton chassis, as this was a shorter wheelbase and fire brigades did not really need a 16 ton GVW for a water tender type appliance.

A few 1617s continued to be supplied to fire services, mainly for Snorkels - which needed the heavier capacity chassis.
