This species can be encountered in most of Europe, in the eastern Palearctic realm, in the Near East, and in North Africa, especially in meadows, grasslands, prairies and occasionally in gardens at an elevation up to 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) above sea level.

La grande sauterelle verte, est une espèce d'insectes orthoptères ensifères.
C'est la plus grande sauterelle que l'on puisse voir presque partout en France, où elle était autrefois très courante. Elle a fortement régressé ou disparu dans les zones d'agriculture intensive, surtout dans la partie nord du pays et au-delà des frontières, mais est toujours bien présente dans les lieux incultes enherbés ou buissonnants, même le long des autoroutes. Les puissantes stridulations des mâles, émises dès juillet par temps assez chaud, sont caractéristiques.
