The Click of the Heart

One evening, I asked my grandparents.
"How did you manage to stay together for so long?"
My grandmother smiled, as if the answer were a gentle secret.
Then she played a song.
"They still loved each other,"
And everything was right there.

It wasn’t fairy tale love,
But the love of real days.
With its silences, its forgiveness, its knowing glances.
They never judged each other,
Just loved,
So deeply, and just as they were.

The closeness, the patience,
The hardships endured.
All of that, yes.
But above all, that rare strength,
Accepting each other without wanting to change one another,
Like two souls who recognize each other
And hold hands through time.

One afternoon, in the park,
I joined them.
And what I saw stopped me in my tracks.
They were there, magnificent,
Sitting on a bench,
The world around them blurry, but they so clear.

I couldn’t resist,
Click.
It wasn’t just a photo.
It was a testimony.
A treasure.
Proof that love, true love, exists.
And that it still lives on, even today.

My son struggles to express happiness due to regulating his emotions through autism, but this day he found it hilarious to put stickers on my mum's forehead.

The little things in life that grandparents do can have a big impact.

He also kept calling her dementia granny all day and she still sat there smiling!
