Fossil Steps

The Guadalupe Mountains are a Permian coral reef, so there are lots of fossils in exposed slopes of a certain age. Why not carve them into steps?

El Capitan-Guadalupe Mountain

The landscape was desolate and majestic. My trip to Guadalupe Mountain was inspired by reading Edmund Burke's Enquiry to Sublime and Beauty, and this view was only sublime.

Hunter Peak

Hunter Peak (8,369 ft, 2551m) is the high point of a brutal loop up Bear Canyon across a ridge and then down the Tejas Trail. I have hiked up the Tejas Trail twice but have not yet hiked Bear Canyon - which is supposedly significantly more brutal.

Alto plano wildflowers - HMM!

The alto plano provides some sheltered and somewhat moister habitats than the rest of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Pl@ntNet identifies these as Fendler's pennycress with a high degree of confidence.

Guadalupe wall

A vertical pano to show a typical scene on the "face" of the Guadalupe Mountains. They began as a huge coral reef in the Permian Sea.

I believe that mountain is Bush Mountain, which we had "climbed" (hiked up) two days previously.
