GUAYAQUIL WOODPECKER male Campephilus gayaquilensis. I was walking from downtown Mindo to our house and this gorgeous male Guayaquil Woodpecker flew above and in front of me and landed in a Guaba tree (Inga sp.) where it proceeded to peck on a limb searching for food. This photo was taken in Mindo in northwestern Ecuador at 10:40 AM on November 5, 2015.

The Guayaquil Woodpecker is distributed from southwestern Colombia south through western Ecuador to northwestern Perú. Guayaquil is a large coastal city located in southwestern Ecuador.
