Volcanic eruption and Metrosideros

The native Hawaiian ‘ōhi‘a trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) are resistant to the effects of volcanic gasses, having evolved in the shadows of Hawaii’s volcanoes. But there comes a time when the lava overwhelms the trees. The forest is resilient, though, and eventually comes back, although the process of recolonizing the lava takes decades.
