Statement

---------------
Location: Ressen, the Netherlands

Farms, country lanes, meadows, orchards — and a little village church.

And then this building, with its striking façade.
Above the entrance, a sculpted horse’s head — likely a clue to its original function.

It rises above everything around it. The church spire might be slightly taller, but this house commands all the attention. The church almost disappears in comparison.
A bold architectural statement in the heart of a quiet village.

St Margaret, Burnham Norton

This is the most interesting and perhaps also the loveliest of the six surviving medieval Burnham churches. It stands on a hilltop about half a mile north of the town of Burnham Market (the name of the parish simply means 'Burnham north town'), and a mile south of the sea in the other direction. St Margaret's Church is a round-tower church in Burnham Norton, Norfolk, England. Likely to have been built in the 11th century, the building retains many medieval architectural features, and is Grade I listed.

Warsaw Old Town

Michael Freemans' Photo School -
Composition Four -
Technical

Task One - Broaden your View with a Wide-Angle Lens

As part of your experiments with a wide angle lens, try to compose a photograph that makes use of the emphasis they place on the foreground. Perhaps try a fun, non-traditional portrait that has disproportionately large features, or attempt an immersive shot where you feel as if you're right in the middle of your scene.

•Work through a series of focal lengths to examine their varying impacts on your composition
•Try focusing on some vertical lines and see how they converge when you alter the position of your camera
•Use a wide-angle lens to distort the proportions of subjects in the foreground of your scene

Response

The old town square in Warsaw, completely rebuilt following the Second World War. Using a wide-angle lens here allowed me to get as much of the scene in as possible. The inclusion of plenty of foreground lets you feel as you are there, and the groups of people help to add some interest to the cobbles.

A Window on Tallin

Michael Freeman's Photo School -
Composition Three -
Colour, Pattern, Space and Light

Task Three - Frames within Frames

Frames can help emphasise the subject of an image, so your challenge here is to find a scene that includes a frame and shoot it. Your frame can be man-made or organic and your subject can be anything you want. Regardless of how you achieve the shot, make it work by combining some of the techniques covered so far.

•Shoot a photograph that includes a frame
•Take into account the orientation of your subject and frame
•Remember to use other compositional techniques, such as balance and the Golden Ratio
•Think about the exposure of your image and don't accidentally underexpose the main subject

Response

Whilst exploring a tower in the city of Tallinn I spotted this view out of one of the windows and thought it would make an interesting photograph. The frame worked particularly well as it contrasts with the colours beyond and gives the viewer the feeling of being inside looking out as I was when I took the shot. This image is slightly unusual as it is a landscape shot, but due to the orientation of the frame and the tall church tower, I felt it was more appropriate to shoot it as a portrait.
