digital Photoshop painting. Painting the dress was fun, as were the hummingbirds.

A real cutie and one of 14 hummingbirds called “puffleg” for the fluffy white feathers covering the tarsus, this species is limited to the high elevation Andes forest in south central Colombia and north central Ecuador. Despite its small range, it is considered of Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

The air is so thin at this altitude that hovering requires too much energy, so this species clings to the shrub to feed. Considered Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, there may be as few as 1000 individuals of this species, which is endemic to a few locations on the central caldera of Colombia.

WE were in Capitol Reef National Park in Utah having a break for a fruit pie at The Gifford House, Fruita when I spotted this little Hummingbird darting about in a bunch of Lillies. I took several shots and this is the best of the bunch. It is quite a severe crop of the original but I think it turned out great!
