portraits in mono: Brother Andrew

This little series of mono conversions originally filled, for me, the gap in portraiture made by lockdown and I have found it interesting to continue with it.

Brother Andrew was living at The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty when I first met him. I took his photo in The Hundred Men's Hall where a midday meal used to be provided for 100 poor men at the gate of the almshouse.

Now, in the summer months, tea and cake are available for visitors to purchase. At one point, Brother Andrew used to rise early to bake the cakes for sale.

What more could be better than spending a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon at a classic English fete, with all the usual trappings, Morris Dancers, bric-a-brac, book white elephant and china stalls, a Punch & Judy show, brass bands a coconut shy, a bouncy castle and fairground rides, all in a wonderful historic setting with beautiful gardens. After the crowds and noise it was nice to go down to the peace and quiet of the fish pond and watch the shoals of large carp swimming around

Watching the kids jumping on the bouncy castle I did wonder if this is where footballers and their fans developed their strange habit of jumping up and down at matches when a goal is scored!

Originally created to feed 100 poor men a meal at the gates of
The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty, the Hall now houses a tea-room.

Somehow, on a little photo shoot to the almshouses this morning, my new 'eating plan' deserted me.

The tea room in The Hundred Men's Hall at St Cross is open in the summertime.

The original purpose of The Hall was to feed 100 poor men a mid-day meal at the gate. Now there is tea and delicious cake available.

Ray had a walk while I was visiting St Cross and we met up to sit in the sunshine with a cup of tea and.....

jugs on a windowsill

Today I had a trip to the Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty, my go-to place for peace, tranquillity and photography.

I liked the jugs on a high windowsill in the Hundred Men's Hall, where I had a refreshing cuppa in the tea room.

The original 14th century purpose of the Hundred Men's Hall was to feed 100 poor men a midday meal at the almshouses.
