Sniffing for edibles

During the lean times, while waiting for freeze up, polar bears, with their sensitive noses, sniff along the shoreline and the inshore ice for kelp, carrion and other edibles, as this bear is doing. Churchill, Hudson Bay, Manitoba. (BTW, what's that dark figure with spear doing lurking over the bear's right shoulder?)

Montréal Squirrel on the Hunt for Food - #2

The second of three pictures, showing a plucky squirrels search for food, something it probably does on an extremely regular basis. Here we see it's tail waggling in the air as it searches for food in the bin. See photograph #3 for the rest of the story.

Goosander (f)

Goosander / mergus merganser. Straws Bridge, Derbyshire. 02/12/2022.

A braver Goosander who frequented my local lake in early December, 2022. Here she had just popped up close to the bank after hunting for food underwater. She was one of seven birds present for a few days. The majority of these wary birds stayed in the centre of the lake, well away from passers-by.

Swarm Of Ants

There had to be a few hundred ants on the sidewalk today. I read that Ants swarm like this when they are looking for food. They disappeared very quickly because we got a heavy downpour.

Snake Sausage Sequence - 03: The Struggle!

While visiting Mangalajodi on a boat named "Falcon", the marshland on the western side of Chilika Lake, Odisha (erstwhile Orissa), the boatman and the guide halted the boat in one spot and guaranteed that there will be some action here.

Were waiting for a few minutes in the area where many black-necked ibises (or Oriental White Ibis or Indian White Ibis or Black Necked Ibis - (Threskiornis melanocephalus)) were grazing by probing their saber-like bills into the marshy lands.

Then suddenly this happened. One bird picked up an Olive Keelback (Atretium schistosum). The snake was really mouthful for the bird.

The bird was repeatedly picking its head and trying to swallow the snake whole. There was struggle on the snake's part by changing the shapes of the coils and ensuring to run away whenever it was put down. However, after a cat-and-mouse game, rather bird-and-snake game for a few minutes, the snake finally managed to swallow the snake without any trouble.

The same bird also happened to consume a slightly smaller checkered keelback (Fowlea piscator) in just another 5 minutes time while we were anchored there.
