Beauty and Death

Diamond Beach, also known as Breiðamerkursandur, is a captivating stretch of black sand located on the South Coast of Iceland, adjacent to the renowned Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Let’s delve into the enchanting details of this natural wonder:

Icebergs and Black Sand:
At Diamond Beach, icebergs that have broken off from the nearby Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon wash up on the shore, creating a striking contrast against the volcanic black sand.
These icebergs, resembling sparkling diamonds, make it a favorite location for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
Breiðamerkursandur:
Breiðamerkursandur is a vast glacial outwash plain stretching approximately 18 kilometers along Iceland’s South Coast.
It extends from the foot of the Kvíárjökull Glacier to the iconic Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.
The sand plains result from the combined flow of three outlet glaciers: Breiðamerkurjökull, Hrútárjökull, and Fjallsjökull.
Jökulsárlón Icebergs:
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, one of Iceland’s most famous attractions, hosts countless icebergs that have calved from the resident glacier.
These icebergs float gracefully on the lagoon, creating an ever-changing and awe-inspiring scene.

Surreal wonders in Jokulsarlon (Iceland)

Jokulsarlon Bay, a realm of surreal wonders, unveils nature's artistic prowess. Among the myriad of peculiarly shaped icebergs, one stands out—a marvel resembling a bird's graceful neck. Beside it, a living counterpart, a bird swims in the frigid embrace of the bay. This frozen sculpture, a testament to nature's whimsy, captures a moment where reality and art converge. The icy forms tell tales of timeless elegance, frozen in the dance between water and sky, a spectacle that only the Icelandic landscape can stage.

Upon arrival in Iceland we were met by news that the winter's first storm was scheduled to sweep across Iceland over the following week. With it, came 14m/s+ winds, dust storms, and harsh conditions. But, it also made for beautiful photography, fresh dustings of snow, and a proper taste of Iceland's harsh but magnificent weather.

These photos were taken over a 7 day, 2,000km road trip along the South East and Eastern Fjords.
