Looking through the pain

KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan — U.S. Army Sgt. Courtney Sanders, a native of Austin, Texas and medic with the 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, Task Force Spartan, helps a member of the Afghan Uniformed Police tend to the injured foot of a boy in a small village near Forward Operating Base Salerno, Feb. 3, 2012. The boy, who severely cut his foot on a bicycle wheel, had been brought to Soldiers of the company during a previous mission through the village. The unit did frequent missions that took them through this particular village so Sanders made it a point to check how well the child was healing and change his bandages every time they passed through.

Ajamal Hazrat, a one-year-old patient, looks at the camera while waiting for medical discharge at the Craig Joint Theater Hospital located on Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, Jan. 11. A large majority of the Hazrat family were badly injured after the propane tank used to heat their home exploded. During the time they were treated here they have touched the hearts of many doctors and medics who interact with them each day.
