Roman kline (couch) with bone carvings and glass inlays

These pieces of furniture have been reassembled from fragments, some of which may come from the imperial villa of Lucius Verus (co-emperor, A.D. 161–169), on the Via Cassia outside Rome. It is not certain that the square glass panels are original to the bed frame and stool, but the carved bone inlays are paralleled on other Roman couches. On the couch legs are friezes of huntsmen, horses, and hounds flanking Ganymede, the handsome Trojan youth who was abducted by Zeus in the guise of an eagle to serve as his wine steward; on the footstool are scenes of winged cupids and leopards; and on the sides of the bed frame, the striking lion protomes have eyes inlaid with glass.

Roman, 1st-2nd century CE.

Fragments of a bronze couch headrest depicting mules and satyrs by Chapps.SL

Fragments of a bronze couch headrest depicting mules and satyrs

Two bronze attachments which decorated the sides of the fulcrum (headrest) of a Roman bed or couch. Although the British Museum's website seems to confuse this with another fulcrum set, the ends are mules' heads, with satyr busts in the roundels at the base. They are inlaid with copper and silver - including the eyes of the mules and satyrs, which are silver. Note the little wings on the mules.

Since this set is 'said to be from Campania' and is dated to the first half of the 1st century CE, they probably came from Pompeii, Herculaneum, or one of the wealthy villas destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 CE.

Roman, said to be from Campania, ca. 20-60 CE.

The Mainz Pugio (Roman dagger) by Chapps.SL

The Mainz Pugio (Roman dagger)

Daggers were side arms and general-purpose tools in the Roman army. The brass and red enamel geometric inlay of this dagger and its sheath makes it unusually fancy. Its belt suspension rings are lost.

Roman, ca. 1st century CE. Found in the River Rhine near Mainz Germany. Iron and bronze with brass and enamel inlays.

Landesmuseum Mainz (inv. 1917.96)

-- Photographed at the British Museum's 'Legion: Life in the Roman Army' exhibition.
