'Wordt ontevredenheid tevredenheid als je je erbij neerlegt?’ Carmen, een kinderloze vrouw van iets meer dan middelbare leeftijd, weet dat zo net nog niet. Opspelende herinneringen aan haar eerste vakantie aan de Middellandse zee met haar ouders in Monterosso (Cinque Terre), waar ze onder water haar eerste zoen kreeg, brengen haar ertoe in haar eentje het vliegtuig naar Italië te nemen voor een korte voorjaarsvakantie. Antonio heette hij. Wie weet komt ze die na al die jaren nog eens tegen. Wat nog niemand weet – behalve de verteller van dit verhaal – is dat ze door onvoorziene omstandigheden veel langer in Monterosso zal moeten blijven dan de bedoeling was. Aan de impasse die dit veroorzaakt, komt een einde wanneer ze op een middag kennismaakt met een jongetje uit het dorp.

Monterosso mon amour is een verhaal over het belang van verhalen. En tegelijkertijd is het een ode aan de anonieme mensen die het literaire bedrijf draaiend houden, zoals boekhandelaren, bibliotheekmedewerkers en organisatoren van lezingen.

Augustus 2020, de Belarussische dichteres Julia Cimafiejeva loopt euforisch door Minsk met haar man en vele andere demonstranten. Twee weken eerder werd Aleksandr Loekasjenko (in dit boek geschreven als Aliaksander Lukašenka) herkozen tot president van Belarus - niet de eerste corrupte verkiezing onder deze dictator. Maar deze keer lijkt alles anders. Honderdduizenden burgers gaan de straat op en ditmaal grijpt de politie niet in. Cimafiejeva ervaart die dagen een onwerkelijk gevoel van vrijheid en geluk, zo schrijft ze in haar dagboek. Een paar weken later is de euforie voorbij en treedt de politie wél op tegen de demonstranten. Velen van hen worden gearresteerd en er vallen doden en gewonden. Als haar broer wordt gearresteerd en ook zij, als een van de gezichten van de oppositie, gevaar blijkt te lopen, besluit ze haar land te ontvluchten. Sinds november 2020 verblijft ze in ballingschap in Oostenrijk.

Dagen in Minsk beschrijft een land dat afglijdt van een autoritair systeem naar een openlijke dictatuur – omdat Belarussen de leugens van de heersers niet langer accepteren. De mensen in Belarus weten dat ze samen de geschiedenis kunnen veranderen. Julia Cimafiejeva is een van hen en dit is haar getuigenis.
