www.thearmorylife.com/gran-sasso-raid/ The article discusses the daring Gran Sasso Raid during World War II, which was an emblematic event showcasing the high-stakes conflict between the Allies and Axis powers. It illustrates Germany's strategic move to rescue the deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, whom the Italian government had arrested following a no-confidence vote in 1943 led by King Victor Emmanuel III. With Italy switching sides to join the Allies, Adolph Hitler tasked SS Major Otto Skorzeny, renowned as "the most dangerous man in Europe," with the rescue operation at the Gran Sasso D’Italia Massif. Skorzeny’s plan, involving airborne troops using gliders and the unique Fieseler Fi 156 "Storch," was successful without any shots fired as they overcame the 200 Carabinieri guards holding Mussolini. After the raid, Mussolini briefly led a puppet regime, the Italian Socialist Republic, until his capture and execution in 1945. This operation, lauded by Hermann Goering and considered a propaganda success for Germany, has been scrutinized in military academies globally and continues to serve as a historical lesson in special operations.
Autumn in the Dolomites and a sunset with a little chapel in the province of Belluno in northern Italy.
Enjoy...
