Scissor-Tailed Scout

The males always arrive first in the early spring. They are establishing & defending their territories. This was my first of year sighting in a tree not yet budded out.

Scissortails Are Back

One of my favorite things in Spring is when the scissortails return to nest and hunt the Blackland prairie areas of the lake. The males show up first.

Looking For A Nesting Spot

The pairs check out possible sites together. She was higher up with leaves obscuring her. This tree is a popular nesting site for several kinds of birds. It is very near wildflowers and prairie grasses so tons of insects are available.

Mom Brought Me A Dragonfly!

While walking the creek bank I spotted two eastern kingbird fledglings. They were in constant motion. Fluttering their wings, yelling for food and going from branch to branch. A parent was flying in & out delivering food drops. Too fast for me to get a shot of the adult but I did get a quick shot of one baby right after a very large food drop.

The other fledgling was further down the branch looking at its sibling with an adorable look of longing. It wanted a dragonfly too.

Mama On Her Nest

Mama Western Kingbird brooding. She has used this same tree for her nest for 5 years now. Dad was standing guard nearby. Didn't realize the criss-crossing twigs were going to frame her eye like that.

Interesting Molting Stage

I've never seen this before. This male seems to be about to shed it's tail feathers as the replacements are already in the process of growing in.

Still A Few Around

Most of the scissor-tails have left our area for the winter but there are a few stragglers hanging around. This male was at the top of a tree where it could watch for flying insects still to be found on the blackland prairie below.

What Are The Odds?

I was watching the western kingbird when an eastern kingbird flew over and landed right beside it. Have never seen them side by side before. I wanted a better shot & pose but they took off in opposite directions right after this click.

There Is Just Something About Scissor-tails

I love scissor-tails. Love the delicate apricot color under their wings and the cool split tails. I like the sounds they make and the way they swoop in the air catching flying insects. This one is a male with that extra long tail. Perched near a blackland prairie that provides abundant food choices.

I Caught A Little Red Bug!

Male scissor-tail perched above me was showing off his catch. A small red insect. Several things it could be, lots of red nymphs of assassin bugs and milkweed bugs and wheel bugs. I can't tell which it is but no matter. They are all tasty snacks for the bird.

The Pre-swallow Juggle

That famous bird maneuver when swallowing an insect. Give it a little toss into position, then gulp. Caught it mid toss.

Sunshine

When the rain finally goes away and the sun comes out, it is beautiful. The sunshine makes everything bright and colorful. A Kingbird was on its favorite perch with vivid greens and blue skies behind it.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game...

Western Kingbird singing it's heart out in the red dirt of a baseball field. On the baseline between 2nd & 3rd base. No clue why it was there. I assume it was either done with a dirt bath or about to have one. It just kept singing while I was there. Adorable.
