Girl & Car Cheesecake: Nice Legs, A Tad Demure (Car Gets Shortshrift)

I've never used the word "shortshrift" in a sentence (or a title) before, to the best of my knowledge.
On the back of this photo (pulled out of an album by some flea market vendor, no doubt) there's a stamp (unreadable) for the studio that developed the picture, and you can just make out "......field, Missouri," which is probably Springfield. Springfield is famously "not the asshole of the universe," but also, "rotten at the core."
But that's another story, as they say. This girl is kinda cute,
and, judging by the photo, if she's still out there, she's probably ninetish. Well, I hope she's still enjoying life, and fits into this bathing suit.

Trees With Knees

At the arboretum, there are a couple of cypress trees growing at the edge of the lake. I've always been fascinated by those raised knees that appear above the roots at the base of the trunks - and at the arboretum there are some colossal looking knees, at least to me, that really spark the imagination.

They always look so swampy, sometimes even spooky, that I just can't help but wonder what evil lurks in the shadows, what slimy creatures swim amid those nooks and crannies, what horrible freaks of nature dwell down there where no one has gone before?

Then I snap back to reality, grab my photos, and quietly move along, thankful my knees are nowhere near as knobby as those. LOL!

Oh, Those Knobby Knees

Cypress knees to be exact. Every year this tree seems to have a few more, and for some reason every year I feel the need to grab a few shots of them.

They remind me a little bit of mine, maybe not as knobby but at times they feel as stiff. :-)

Do you like my earrings?

I just loved having sheep and cows all around me at the cottage I stayed in. How can you not smile when you are greeted with a face like this one each morning?!! :)

Knobby Knees

Cypress knees really fascinate me they way they grow. They look more like stalagmites you would expect to find on the floor in a cave than roots of a tree growing on the bank of a lake.

those are SOME knobby knees!

Perched on a limb in the middle of a tall cypress tree, this great blue heron let it all hang out trying to stay cool on an unseasonably hot mid-September afternoon . . . until it saw me taking pictures. Then it folded up its wings and turned around. Seems like a bird can't have any privacy, even in its own tree!

(Its open mouth and kind of puffed-out throat show it's using "gular fluttering" in which it vibrates its throat muscles to dissipate heat. Also, its open wings create a larger surface area from which body heat can escape.)

me and my shadow

Here in Florida, Willets are fixtures on our beaches. They aren't flashy birds, but I think they are quite lovely with their soft blending of colours.

Piercing calls and distinctive wing markings make the otherwise subdued Willet one of our most conspicuous large shorebirds. Whether in mottled brown breeding plumage or gray winter colors, Willets in flight reveal a bold white and black stripe running the length of each wing. These long-legged, straight-billed shorebirds feed along beaches, mudflats, and rocky shores. Willets are common on most of our coastline.

Willets are often seen alone. They walk deliberately, pausing to probe for crabs, worms and other prey in sand and mudflats, or to pick at insects and mollusks. When startled, they react with a piercing call, often opening their wings and running rather than taking flight.

barnacles, beach, boulders, and boards....oh, and a willet too.

This sweet little bird posed so beautifully for me. He is lovely when viewed on full-screen. I liked all the background elements including the broken board (which has probably been lying about in the water since the bad hurricanes of 2004) with the barnacles clinging to it.
