Japan!

Japan!
In my high school days, I took part in a project for ‘rare East Asian languages’ at the university as a junior student. The choices were Japanese and Chinese. And although the grandfather of a school friend was a sports ambassador for Japan, I primarily associated mangas with Japan, with which I had more of a perceptive than a moving relationship. So I decided to study Chinese. A few years later at university, I met two of my later good friends. Kei and Nazumi. And even though we spent our first semesters soaking up international student life together, I still learnt about one or two Japanese cultures that I still appreciate today.
That's how I started to delve into the history of Okinawa. A prefecture that not only has special features as a blue zone, a zone for longevity, but also fascinates with a beautiful landscape. I also fell in love with the delicious Okinawa tofu, which has the most protein of all tofu varieties. Once on the mainland, I turned my attention to the wonderful tea plantations from which I enjoy drinking my matcha. These are captivating in terms of their appearance, flavour and health benefits. Tea ceremonies should also not be forgotten at this point and make every tea or matcha something special. The purist Zen gardens combine nature with so much structure and clarity. Just like the long traditions of Kenjutsu. The sword art of the samurai. Incidentally, each katana is folded 5 times, resulting in exactly 32768 layers in the blade. Japan has both a promising future and traditions, as well as a closeness to nature, a pronounced attitude to hygiene, marvellous craftsmanship, creativity in fashion and a multi-layered food culture. The last emperor of the world is also at home in Japan. Since 1979, the Tennō of Japan has been the only monarch to be called emperor.
The little red kokeshi in my hand was Kei's first gift from Japan. Japan could hardly be more polarising than seeing this kokeshi in the middle of a vibrant metropolis. Colourful, shrill, hectic meets calm and tradition. Both have their place and sometimes they come together.
Have any of you ever been to Japan and how did you like it?

Japan!
.
