6 April 2025 - Viseu de Sus, Romania by Jean-Marc Frybourg

6 April 2025 - Viseu de Sus, Romania

This is just another morning in Viseu de Sus, in northern Romania. Today, 3 steam trains will travel on the Vaser River Valley line. It is early April, and spring weather was expected but it was to be a wintery landscape and likewise weather with snow falls.

A train is shunting cars to prepare an authentic-looking charter photo-train while two engines are getting ready for charter tourist trains.

Jädraås–Tallås Järnväg and the Jädraån by Jean-Marc Frybourg

Jädraås–Tallås Järnväg and the Jädraån

With twelve “a”, the title of this picture is a real challenge to pronounce in perfect Swedish. It plays on the fact that the letter “a” and its variations “å” and “ä” is ubiquitous in Swedish language.

We are on the JTJ, the Jädraås–Tallås Järnväg, (Jädraås – Tallås Railway), a Swedish museum railway in the Iron Land of Gästrikland, a province 200 km north of Stockholm. The narrow-gauge line is 891 mm wide.

The steam engine is the Mallet #12, one of the 3 Mallets built by Aktiebolaget Atlas in Stockholm in 1910 for the DONJ railway (Dala-Ockelbo-Norrsundets Järnväg) for heavy freight trains.

The Jädraån is the name of the nearby river, which is broad enough at this location to look like a lake.

20 May 2025 - Lenekatten freight at Funbo, Sweden

20 May 2025 - A freight charter is about to pass the bridge over the Funboån stream near Funbo between Gunsta and Marielund, on the Uppsala – Faringe “Lennekatten” museum railway. This is an 891 mm narrow gauge line (2 ft 11+3⁄32), = old Swedish 3-foot gauge. The locomotive is a 2-8-0 (140 or 1-D also called Consolidation type) built in 1909 in Sweden by Vagn- & Maskinfabriken in Falun for the Byvalla - Långshyttans Järnväg (BLJ).

2025-05-16 The HV3 995 on Vuokatti – Nurmes, Finland

May 16, 2025 - We are in Finland, in the Cajania region (Kainuu in Finnish), Sotkamo municipality, on the Vuokatti – Nurmes section of the Joensuu – Kontiomäki line (broad gauge : 1520 mm). The wood-fired locomotive #995 of the HV3 series (built in 1938) hauls a charter train from Vuokatti toward Nurmes. It is passing an isolated area, south of the Saviaho halt, north of the Maanselka station.

On the double-track Martin – Horná Štubňa, the 475-196 coming from Vrútky with a rack of authentic vintage passenger cars is running at full speed, offering us our first picture of the day. It is passing without stop the Rakovo Príbovce station, where an old telegraphic pole is still standing up.

2025-05-11 The 556-036 at the Rábkinský Tunnel

A series of steam charter “photo trains” was organized on May 9, 10 and 11 in central Slovakia, within the perimeter Vrútky - Banská Bystrica – Zvollen - Prievidza and the most scenic mountain lines were used. One of them was the spectacular section Banská Bystrica - Dolná Štubňa of the line 170 Zvolen – Vrútky. The picture shows the 556-036 climbing westward towards the summit of the line exiting the Rábkinský Tunnel.

The 7 travelling at 10

November 8, 2022 - On the Vale of Rheidol Railway, the 2-6-2T #7 named Owain Glyndŵr (Owen Glendower in English) is approaching an antiquated 10 mph speed limit sign near Nantyronen. That is half the max speed of the locomotive.

This railway has a unique gauge of 603mm or 1 ft 11+3⁄4 in in the barbaric British system.

Awaiting maintenance forever by Jean-Marc Frybourg

Awaiting maintenance forever

24 October 2022 – Septemvri, Bulgaria

Parked in front of her healthcare facility – the Septemvri locomotive depot - this old and tired lady is awaiting care that might never come.

Loaded on a standard gauge car, this 600 mm-gauge steamer carrying the 460-70 number has been waiting there for years. But there is little hope it will be rebuilt in operating condition given that it is not compatible with the 760 mm gauge on the Rhodope railway.

Bernd Seiler, who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of steam locomotives, tells us that this engine is a “Brigade locomotive” built by Henschel in 1917 with the builder’s number 15065.

Henschel 15065/1917 was delivered as "HF 1052" - where HF means Heeresfeldbahn = Army field railway - to the Eisenbahn-Ersatzpark in Berlin. After the end of WW1, the locomotive was transferred to the Bulgarian State Railways in 1920, which classified it as BDZ 470-60. There is evidence of the locomotive being used on the 57-kilometer Kaspican - Todor - Ikonomovo line between 1946 and 1965. – Thank you Bernd.

It was probably sent to Septemvri for preservation because this is where the national Bulgarian railway BDZ has workshops able to take care and maintaining the narrow-gauge steam engines of the Rhodope railway. In fact, today, there are lots of such “precious ruins” in Septemvri, and only one operational steamer, the 2-10-2-Tank 609-76.

I hope that you like how I processed the picture: comments are more than welcome!

Vom Lessacher Tunnel bis zum Rosenbachviadukt by Jean-Marc Frybourg

Vom Lessacher Tunnel bis zum Rosenbachviadukt

On the Rosenthalbahn (Rosen Valley Railway), the Rosenbach viaduct is the most remarkable bridge. Unfortunately the line is now unused because the maintenance cost is too high to keep running trains on it. The FarRail charters in October 2024 were probably the last trains to be seen on this magnificent bridge. The charter participants who paid for the steam train benefited from a total of 10 eastward runpasts on October 12 and 4 westbound on the morning of October 13, to allow for pictures under almost all possible angles.

The steam engine is the ex-ÖBB 93.1332 (formerly numbered 378.32), a 2-8-2-Tank built by the Wien Florisdorf factory in 1927 and designed for branch line services. It is now owned by NBiK, Nostalgiebahnen in Kärnten (Carinthia nostalgy railroads) and works mostly on the Rosentaler Dampfzüge tourist railway between Weizelsdorf and Ferlach and sometimes west of Weizelsdorf on the Rosentalbahn.
