A Nevada Highway Leading Me to a Mountain Destination

While on Loneliest Road in America (US 50) with a view looking into Nevada and some distant ridges and peaks of the Snake Range in Great Basin National Park. My thought on composing this image was to get down low and capture a look across the highway. I picked a point a little ways down in order to have more of the far away portions in focus. The rest of the image composition was merely lining up the highway and center stripe and exposing the image to capture the brighter portions caught in sunlight behind the mountains.

Lonlier Than

US 50 - as it runs across Nevada from Utah to California has gained the marketing moniker of "The Loneliest Road in America". It's utter BS, as we got on this road, heading north from the US 50 - and this road was FAR lonelier. Didn't pass any cars at all. Technically we were on a pretty crappy dirt road driving to the horizon - but it sure seemed more lonely than the aforementioned Loneliest Road.

Dang marketers.

Caught Along the State Line of Nevada and Utah

While along the Nevada and Utah state line with a view looking to the east. My thought on composing this image was to line up the highway centerline and use it as a leading line into the image. I kept the horizon more or less leveled-on and found the focus a little ways into the image in order to have more of the distant points in focus.

Living a Tradition of Solitude as I Head for the Mountains

A setting looking to the west while taking in a view down the Loneliest Road in America (US 50) while standing at the Nevada and Utah state line. My thought on composing this image was to get close to the highway and capture an image looking down the road. I decided on a focal point that was nearby what did close down a little on the aperture to have some more distant objects a little in focus.

Notch Peak

I stopped along the road to get a picture of this distinctive mountain. The internet later told me the summit of this is called Notch Peak, and it rises to an elevation of 9,658 feet above sea level in the House Range. There is a federal wilderness study area surrounding this peak, which is home to a grove of Great Basin bristlecones with trees dating to 3,000 and 4,000 years old. So this could probably be a national park, too, except Utah tends to get mad over having national parks installed there.

Life Elevated

The "Welcome to Utah" sign on US 50 stands in the parking lot of an old motel and RV campground. They've put a bench beneath it. I've thought ever since I took this picture that I should have had Robin take a picture of me sitting on that bench, but I didn't want to get out of the car at the time because my feet hurt.

Loneliest Road

All the marketing designations of US 50 as the Loneliest Road in America end at the eastern border of Nevada, but the road doesn't make any new friends in Utah. It's still pretty lonely. It's pretty looking west at a sunset, though.
