Ophelia - stranger 444 by englishreader

Ophelia - stranger 444

I met Ophelia and her partner Aidan (see my previous stranger) as they left the 2025 Tattoo Convention in Nottingham. They’d come from Grimsby to visit the convention.

One of the buildings’ pillars and walls provided a suitable backdrop for Ophelia. The overcast daylight provided soft illumination so taking photographs of Ophelia couldn’t have been easier.

Ophelia works as a bartender and also as an influencer in the world of goth and rock fashion.

In her spare time Ophelia enjoys writing autobiographies and fantasy fiction.

The single word Ophelia would use to describe herself is chaotic. Aiden said the word he would use to describe Ophelia would be fashionable.

Ophelia told me her guilty pleasure was Hello Kitty.

If I could grant Ophelia a wish it would be to live her life without having to worry about money.

I asked Ophelia if she had a message for the people of the world and she said to be yourself.

Thank-you Ophelia for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your photograph.

Valentina - stranger 442 by englishreader

Valentina - stranger 442

Valentina’s bright red top made her stand out from the crowd as she walked towards me in Nottingham so I stepped forwards and introduced my stranger project to her. As it happened, we had met on the shaded side of the street so that was where I photographed her.

Valentina was born in Argentina but lives in Valencia, Spain. When I met her, she was travelling and England was just one of her stops. Back home, Valentina works in a restaurant.

Valentina told me two of her hobbies were going to concerts and visiting museums.

The one-word that Valentina would use to describe herself is happy.

Valentina’s biggest strength is empathy. She then said that she likes to try and solve other people’s problems.

If I could grant Valentina a wish it would be to bring her aunt to Spain from Argentina.

Thank-you Valentina for letting me interrupt your day and for saying yes to me photographing you for my project. I hope you like your portrait.

First Step into Woodcrest by Isabela Evergarden

First Step into Woodcrest

The bus hissed softly as the doors opened, and the cold breath of an unfamiliar city brushed against my face for the first time. I stepped down slowly, feeling the rhythm of my heartbeat echo against the blood-red pendant resting on my chest — a silent reminder that no matter how far from home I am, I’m still me. Woodcrest watched me in silence, like a sleeping beast waiting for me to make the first move.

Warm Shelter, Heartbeat Whisper

I found shelter not in the cabin walls, but in the quiet rhythm of his heartbeat beneath my cheek. In that moment, the storm outside could wait.

Karya - stranger 430

During my visit to the 2025 Beltane Pagan Market held in the Avenues of Nottingham’s Sneinton Market I approached a group of three people to see if one or all of them would say yes to being photographed for my stranger project. All three agreed, so we moved to a quieter area that offered a choice of backgrounds that weren’t in direct sunlight. Having already photographed Lochrann (see my previous stranger), next was Karya. A dark grey wall made a perfect backdrop for her.

Karya told me her name was Turkish and she’d been given this name as some of her family come from Turkey, but she’d been born in London. Karya had left the capital with Lochrann to make a new home in Nottingham. Karya had worked as a bartender but hadn’t got a job at the moment as she needed time to relax before having a baby. Karya does tattooing, and was hoping to make a career for herself doing this when the time was right.

Karya has many hobbies and told me about three of them. She enjoys art, nearly always in black and white with gothic or medieval themes created either with pencils or digitally. Karya has a big interest in music and plays a wide variety of instruments. Karya also likes D.I.Y., especially upcycling furniture.

The one-word Karya would use to describe herself is creative.

Karya’s biggest strength is her determination.

If I could grant Karya a wish it would be to have unlimited money.

Thank-you Karya for giving me some of your time so I could photograph you for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Megan - stranger 431 by englishreader

Megan - stranger 431

I met Megan along with two of her friends, Lochrann and Karya (see my previous two strangers) at the 2025 Beltane Pagan Market held in the Avenues of Sneinton Market, Nottingham. All three were keen to become part of my stranger project.

As the main Avenues were crowded, we move to an end one which was virtually deserted. It was also great that our location was in the shade and offered a choice of suitable backdrops. A dark grey door became an ideal background for Megan.

Megan is from Nottingham and is a student studying fine art. She also has a part-time job as a sales assistant.

Megan’s hobbies include producing linocut prints. Megan does other artwork too, usually of architecture or figurative subjects. Another past-time is making chainmail. This she does for herself but hopes to sell it to others in the future.

Megan runs a zine about Black Metal – find out more here: www.instagram.com/malevolentzine/

What one-word would Megan use to describe herself? “Mysterious,” she said, then added, “how I present myself and the real me are very different.”

Megan’s guilty pleasure is alcohol.

If I could grant Megan a wish what would it be? “To live in a castle,” she replied.

Thank-you Megan for saying yes to me photographing you for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Amy - stranger 421 by englishreader

Amy - stranger 421

I saw Amy on the opposite side of the road to me, so crossed over and introduced my stranger project to her. We then moved a very short distance to an entrance to a small courtyard that had a white wall with painted flowers decorating it as I thought this would make for a great background. It was also out of the bright sunlight but allowed some directional lighting to come in too. I chose this picture as I liked how the light was illuminating Amy’s face when she looked to the side.

Amy is from China but had come to England to take a one-year course in International Business. I asked Amy if she preferred China to the UK and she said she liked England the best, but that may be because it is all so new to her.

Amy told me she wants to be an online influencer, especially in the world of singing. Amy said she likes singing pop music the best in both English and Chinese.

What single word would Amy use to describe herself? “Outgoing,” she said.

Amy’s guilty pleasure is eating too much chocolate.

If I could grant Amy a wish she said, “to be happy forever.”

Thank-you Amy for allowing me to interrupt your day and for agreeing to me photographing you for my project. I hope you like your portrait.

Grace - stranger 420 by englishreader

Grace - stranger 420

I met Grace whilst I was wandering around Nottingham looking for people to add to my stranger project. Grace immediately agreed to being photographed and I decided to use the building we were standing next to as my background. It was obvious Grace was confident in front of the camera and she told me that she did a little modelling in a studio for a fellow student who was studying fashion.

Grace was in her first year of a two-year course studying art and design. Grace uses acrylics to paint street scenes and also graffiti-based artwork.

In her spare time Grace pursues her interest in fashion, listens to music (mainly grime) and visits the gym.

I asked Grace to describe herself in one word and she said interesting.

If I could grant Grace a single wish it would be for eternal happiness.

Thank-you Grace for giving me some of your time so I could photograph you for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Isabel - stranger 418 by englishreader

Isabel - stranger 418

As I approached the Old Market Square in Nottingham, I noticed a young lady sitting alone and liked how her black hair contrasted with the white building behind her, so I went over and introduced my stranger project to her. Isabel agreed to becoming part of it without hesitation and I found out she was waiting for a friend to join her and this happened whilst we were chatting after I’d taken my pictures of Isabel.

The harsh sunlight meant I had to be careful with angles so Isabel didn’t end up squinting at me or that there were too many heavy shadows falling on her face. I kept having to pause as people in brightly coloured clothing walked through my field of view and would have become a distraction in the background had they been there when I took my photographs.

Isabel is a student doing a course in fashion. Isabel hopes this will lead to a job as a fashion stylist.

I asked if Isabel had any hobbies and she said not really as she doesn’t have much time for any at the moment. When not studying, Isabel has a job as a retail assistant and also does private coaching in gymnastics. Isabel did say that if she does find any free time her guilty pleasure would be reading both fiction and non-fiction and told me that she has a fixation on reading about psychology.

What one word would Isabel use to describe herself? “Interesting,” she said.

If I could grant Isabel one wish what would it be? “Good health,” she replied.

Thank-you Isabel for saying yes to me photographing you for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Gabriela - stranger 398 by englishreader

Gabriela - stranger 398

Nottingham’s Pagan Market offered plenty of opportunity to approach people to see if they’d be willing to become part of my stranger project. I met Gabriela by a brick wall that was side lit and this light gave a wonderful sheen to her coat. Gabriela’s black clothing and hair against a dark background suited a monochrome finish to the photograph perfectly.

Gabriela is from Latvia but had moved to England because she was obsessed with the UK. She told me she believed that in a past life she had lived here too. England’s rich Pagan traditions were also an attraction, even though Latvia also has these.

Gabriela has worked as a therapist for the last ten years. She’s also worked as a band photographer and does modelling for magazines that cover the alternative scene.

What one word would Gabriela use to describe herself? “Caring,” she replied.

If I could grant Gabriela a wish what would it be? “To have the power to help animals,” she said.

Gabriela told me her guilty pleasure was chocolate.

Thank-you Gabriela for saying yes to me photographing you for my project. I hope you like your portrait.
