Got A New Dragonfly!

Go to new places, see new stuff. My 1st trip to Mustang Park. This dragon looks a bit strange but has amazing eyes. Someone had fun naming this dragonfly.

Love Birds

They seem to like my feeders. I think they are a mated pair. But I have not seen any fledglings or juveniles. Happy to have them.

Isn't She Lovely

Love my juvenile cardinals as they are getting their adult feathers. They are pretty calm too. Unlike the juvenile blue jays who act like they are hyped up on too much coffee.

Grass Spider Sitting In Her Funnel Home

This one surprised me, I thought they usually had their funnels on the ground. She was at eye level. She curled up a leaf to make her funnel inside.

Broad-winged Hawk by Kaptured by Kala

Broad-winged Hawk

In my daughter's back yard. Only my 2nd time to see one. I was late to the party so only got 1 shot before it took off. I was not in a position to see what it had in its left foot. My daughter and my friend were better positioned so here is the rest of the story. The hawk had grabbed a big fat Woodhouse's toad off the ground. After my shot, it transferred the toad to its beak and flew off with it. Very cool. Um, maybe not so cool for the toad.

Try 2 by Kaptured by Kala

Try 2

Once I became aware of the fact that there was a fawn back there, I tried hard to get a good clear whole-body photo but it just was not to be. It was too dark in there and there were too many trees and branches in the way. It was still thrilling to see my first fawn.

Do You See It?

I was focusing on the doe and did not see the fawn when I took this shot. So glad I accidentally caught them both looking at me. It was challenging, this was a fair distance, and it was very dark back in those trees. This is my first fawn, adorable.

Suprise! by Kaptured by Kala

Suprise!

Just as we were about to leave, another little head popped up. Mom has at least 2 babies. We stayed another 5 minutes to see if there was a 3rd but 2 was all we saw on this trip. What a couple of cuties. We left them undisturbed and waited enough days to be sure the nest was now empty before sharing photos. There is so much bramble around this nest that was rapidly growing higher that a 3rd trip would have been impassable. Mom chose her site well.

More Relaxed

Baby got bored with us quickly & went back to looking around at everything other than us. And mom looked like she was going back to sleep. Of course, still had one eye on us. This behavior lets you know that you have stayed far enough back from a nest. Highly cropped shot.

Cute Baby!

After stumbling onto the owl nest, we stayed away for a month, then went back. Spied an adorable little cutie peeking back at us. Highly cropped shot taken from a good distance but mom & baby both spotted us anyway.

Dad Was Standing Guard

As we were giving mom some peace by leaving, we spotted dad in a nearby tree. He had a direct line of sight to mom sitting on her nest. He glared at us while we took his photo & went on our way.

Red Paper Wasp Gathering Wood For Her Nest

There are signs at the rookery, and they have wooden posts. I see red wasps gathering slivers of wood off those posts to make the "paper" of their nests.

It makes sense that dragonflies hang out at rookeries, considering all the flies to be found there. She has a prime hunting spot.
