For one of the smallest countries in the world, Luxembourg is somewhat unique whereby the cargo airline is larger than the passenger carrier, as well as both carriers acting as the flag-carrier for the small state.
Cargolux is one of the most recognisable cargo carriers in the world, operating a 100% Boeing 747 freighter fleet from their Luxembourg hub; the carrier was the launch customer of both the Boeing 747-400F in 1993 and Boeing 747-8F in 2011, and continues to operate a significant number of the venerable jet across the world.
For Cargolux, the carrier alongside their Italian subsidiary operates 10 Boeing 747-400Fs which are split either operating with General Electric CF6s or Rolls-Royce RB211s engines; the eldest as well as the prototype Boeing 747-400Fs dating from 1993 have long since been withdrawn although are still in operation with UPS. The 10 remaining examples mostly dating from 1999 either having been delivered new to the carrier or acquired second-hand are now in their twilight years as they are expected to be withdrawn in the coming years with 10 Boeing 777-8Fs on-order, plus 6 options for the type.
On top of the Boeing 747-400Fs, the carrier also operates 6 of the extended range Boeing 747-400ERFs that first began to arrive in 2013 with the last example acquired as late as 2019 through the second-hand market, these typically operate alongside the standard Boeing 747-400Fs, and their future may be curtailed if Cargolux does exercise the 6 options of the Boeing 777-8F.
Finally, Cargolux operates 14 Boeing 747-8Fs, being the launch customer of the type back in 2011 and operating the prototype which entered service 2 years later in 2013. The Boeing 747-8F is their workhorse and operates all routes amongst the Cargolux network and considering their age, they are not expected to be retired in the near future.
Currently, Cargolux operates 30 Boeing 747s, which includes 10 Boeing 747-400Fs (4 operated for Cargolux Italia), 6 Boeing 747-400ERFs and 14 Boeing 747-8Fs.
Victor Charlie Juliet is one of 14 Boeing 747-8Fs operated by Cargolux, delivered new to the flag-carrier on 30th September 2014 and she is powered by 4 General Electric GEnx-2B67 engines. She is named after the city of Zhengzhou, located in the Henan Province of Northern China.
