Kingfisher Friday's : Brushed by the light

Am I too late for Kingfisher Friday?
Here's one of my favs from April - fishing for supper in the last hour before sunset.

I took so many photos of this beauty (or its partner whom I've not managed to really distinguish) ... that I might have for Friday's for years to come. It's nuts how many hours it can take to see one, or how far I might walk, yet, irrespective of how many pics I've taken, can't get enough.

Decent in-flights are incredibly hard to get. I'm old enough to know my reflexes aren't getting any faster - there is practically no chance of photographing properly on reflex / reaction. They're like bee-eaters. Too fast, but some day I'll have a tool with proper pre-capture and we'll get some.

Corythornis cristatus

Here's the mating pair of malachite kingfishers I mentioned in my last post.

I felt seriously lucky to spot just one of them, but to see a pair pop up, hunt and look for a nesting area together was astonishing! These are probably my favourite bird species.

Bec rouge, iris brun foncé, pattes rouge-orange.
Les deux sexes sont semblables.

Corythornis cristatus

Got up super early this weekend and waited out in a bird hide with my 18-150mm lens. I'm not too fond of this lens but it was the only thing that would let me get a close enough shot of the birds.

Next thing I know, there was a mating pair of malachite kingfishers that swooped down and started hunting for small fish. I let out an audible gasp and started snapping away. What an incredible experience and what gorgeous birds! I'll be posting the pair together in the next few days.

This was taken at Intaka Island near Century City - an awesome wildlife sanctuary. I highly suggest checking it out.
