In autumn, the Serra do Marão exhibits the characteristic chromatic transformation of the deciduous forests of northern Portugal. Oak and chestnut trees, the predominant species, turn yellow and orange before losing their leaves, contrasting with the persistent green of pine trees and other conifers. This phenomenon, the result of chlorophyll degradation and carotenoid concentration, prepares the trees for winter dormancy.
With an altitude of 1416 meters, the Serra do Marão separates the coast from the interior of Trás-os-Montes and, at the end of November, it records high rainfall from Atlantic fronts. This humidity, with the layer of dry leaves that covers the soil, contributes to the fertility of the soils and sustains the diversity of the local flora and fauna.

Morning in the Douro valley

Morning fog on the distant Marão mountains helped provide a spectacular view from our B&B, Casa d'Alem, highlighting the local vineyards and the Church of Our Lady of Oliveira. Originally a Romanesque temple from the early 1600's, it was remodeled in 1694 in the Portuguese Baroque style. Unlikely in such a small village, the church is a legacy of the wealth from port wine production in the 18th century.
