1960 s. walter stewart public library / formerly the east york public library, amalgamated into the toronto public library system in 1966.
as a young man, this terrazzo was found on the floor at the entrance of the library, since the renovations of the branch in 2006, it's been incorporated into the southern wall of the entrance.
s. walter stewart branch opened for service, 18 august 1960; officially opened by hon. r.h. mcgregor, minister of parliament for york east, on 3 october of that year.
the library's circular design was unique in toronto, and, at the time, said to be one of only four circular libraries in the world.
named for s. walter stewart (1897-1969), a pioneer of library service in east york, serving on the east york public library board from its establishment in 1946 until his death.
