Shade Climber

It's a Multicoloured Asian Lady Beetle, one of a species of "lady bugs." I spotted this one climbing up a woven window shade in our house on a recent night. I took this shot with one hand shining a flashlight on the bug and the other hand holding my camera. These bugs are about 1/4 inch long. This one looks to have picked up some fiber from the shade on its backside.

NO PHOTOSHOP.

Harmonia axyridis is a large coccinellid beetle. Its colour ranges from yellow-orange to black, and the number of spots between none and 22. It is native to eastern Asia, but has been artificially introduced to North America and Europe to control aphids and scale insects. It is now common, well known, and spreading in those regions, and has also established in South Africa and widely across South America.

It is commonly known as the harlequin ladybird (because it occurs in numerous colour forms). It is also known in North America as the multicolored Asian lady beetle, and (because it invades homes in October in preparation for overwintering) as Halloween lady beetle. In Japan, it is not generally distinguished from the seven-spot ladybird which is also common there.

When the species first arrived in the UK, it was labelled in jest as "the many-named ladybird", because among the names listed were: multivariate, southern, Japanese, and pumpkin ladybird.

Harlequin lady beetle

A beautiful lady beetle, isn't it? Incidentally, the Harlequin lady beetle is not native to Europe, but has been used to control aphids in agriculture since the 1980s. Around the turn of the millennium, they also appeared in the open land and have since been discovered almost everywhere throughout Europe. Unfortunately, they are also displacing native lady beetle species.

Multicoloured Asian Ladybeetle (Harmonia axyridis): 6.6 - 8.5 mm

This is one of the species of ladybeetles seen in the Pacific Northwest. It is native to eastern Asia, but has been introduced to North America and Europe as a biocontrol agent for aphids and scale insects. In the last three decades, this insect has spread throughout the US and Canada.

The adult is highly variable in color and pattern. The base pattern of the species is red to red-orange with 18 spots. These spots may be exaggerated, or eliminated, on an individual basis.

Terra Nova, Richmond.

The adult is highly variable in colour and pattern. The base pattern of the species is red to red-orange with 18 spots. These spots may be exaggerated, or eliminated, on an individual basis. The common red form is dominant in most areas.

A native of eastern Asia, it was introduced into the United States by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a predator of aphids and scale insects.

It is currently found throughout US and southern Canada, but absent from much of the midwest and northern Canada.
