GERONA MUSEO D ARTE

Gerona.

The final judgement The Chosen and The Damned
The archangel Michael dominates the lower section of the painting. With his spear he pierces a large demon. With his left hand he holds the scales on which a resurrected man and the book of good works performed in life are weighed. On the left the angels push the procession of the blessed towards the architecture of the celestial Jerusalem. On the right the devils push the damned into the flames, into the gaping mouth of the infernal Leviathan.

of La Galleria Nazionale in Rome.

The formal full name is Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna - founded in 1883 (which I guess why they would consider Canova a modern enough artist to be mentioned on the facade, he had died in 1822 - so hardly that modern by current standards). The building, designed by Cesare Bazzani, was constructed 1911-1915, and the Roman numerals seen here on the building's right corner, MDCCCCXI, is read 1911 (though 1911 might as well had been written MCMXI). The two ladies are one set of two on the top of the building made by the sculptors Adolfo Pantaresi and Albino Candoni, symbolizing fame.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
Sevilla, 1617 - 1682
Resurrección del Señor
1650-1660

Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando
Madrid
acquired from the Merced convent in Seville
October 5, 2017

The slender nude body of Christ in this work, far from the usual Sevillian model, is considered one of the most beautiful in Spanish painting. The loosely made scene is enveloped in a golden light that stands out against a darker background and the almost gloomy treatment of the sleeping soldiers in the foreground. In this representation of the sleeping soldiers, Murillo follows Francisco Pacheco's recommendation to abide by the guidelines of the Church, correcting the custom of representing them awake, which simply responded to a compositional resource.
The painting was in the Capilla de la Expiración of the convento de la Merced Calzada, / Chapel of the Expiration of the Merced Calzada convent, Seville; in 1810, in the Alcazar of Seville.

Fray Hernando de Santiago
ca. 1628

"The apparent uniformity is nuanced by the different orientation of the figures, by the variety in the disposition of the hands and by the range of tonalities that make these paintings a true symphony of whites.
Fray Hernando de Santiago who would be the only monk who could pose for Zurbarán, as evidenced by the inscription Vera Efigie that appears next to his name."
He was a famous preacher lauded by Philip II

Fray Jerónimo Pérez (ca 1628)
by Francisco de Zurbarán

Zurbaran signed a contract with the friars of the Merced Calzada de Sevilla with the commission to make twenty-two paintings on the life of San Pedro Nolasco, founder of the order, [that set is today dispersed between the Cathedral of Seville, the Prado Museum and foreign collections.] and then another series of twelve canvases, portraits of theologians and scholars of the order. Five of these were confiscated by Godoy in 1802. All Godoy's collection was handed over to the Academy in 1816.

Juan de Zurbarán

still life with lemons, circa 1640
Juan de Zurbarán (1620-1649) was the son of Francisco de Zurbarán.
"Trained with his father Francisco de Zurbarán, this artist specialized in the still life genre. Fewer than ten are documented due to his early death, and only three dated, those preserved in Bordeaux, Kyiv and Finland. They are simple compositions executed with gloomy lighting, a mastery of meticulous and detailed technique that distinguishes the different textures of each object (leaves, lemons, plate), and a perfect delineation of the contours, all of which can be appreciated in this exquisite canvas."

Jose de Ribera

Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando

October 5, 2017
Provenance: Casa de los Jesuitas, Toledo.

"Considered the best cultivator of tenebrism in Spain, Ribera was a painter of religious and mythological subjects, with a special predilection for penitent saints and martyrs, which he captures with great realism, drawing inspiration from popular types of everyday life. ...
On a gloomy background is presented the three-quarter image of Christ in profile, with the crown of thorns, the tunic and the broken cane, after receiving the insult of the people after the scourging. The figure, slightly displaced to the right, marks a diagonal accentuated by the marked chiaroscuro of the face, as well as by the torso and arm that are left uncovered. It is a good anatomical study. "

"the Man of Sorrows" / Ecce Homo/ Cristo entre dos sayones

A mature work of the painter, it dispenses with accessory elements -the neutral and dark background eliminates all spatial and temporal reference- so that the viewer's gaze can concentrate on the three half-length figures. That of Christ, handcuffed and crowned with thorns...The executioner on the left, with caricatured features and a sarcastic gesture inspired by Nordic mannerism, who brutally grasps the purple mantle. And the one on the right, Pilate, pointing with his right index finger at the condemned man."
