Three more issues of Third World newspaper added: 1972

Three more issues of Washington, D.C.’s Third World have digitized and added to the Spark Collection.

Vol. 3 No. 12 dated April 28, 1972 extensively covers the upcoming first African Liberation Day demonstration to be held in Washington, D.C.; Vol 3 No. 13 dated May 12, 1972 reports on the upcoming African Liberation Day demonstration to be held in Washington, D.C. and a continuing interview with John O. Killens; Vol. 4 No. 2 dated October 20, 1972 carries an extensive interview with Lewis Michaux, the longtime Harlem bookseller.

Third World was an independent Washington, D.C. area tabloid newspaper dedicated to Black liberation that began publishing in September 1969 and continued through at least 1973.

The paper concentrated on news of Black liberation, Pan-Africanism, and providing news stories and interviews related to black political thought. It also published poems, photographs and other artwork and reviewed performances of black artists.

It usually featured an interview or in-depth story with prominent Black Nationalists, Pan-Africanists, writers, poets, musicians, artists and community activists. In its later years it featured a column written by Government Employees United Against Racial Discrimination (GUARD).

The paper was financed through both sales (25 cents per copy) and advertisements, although donations played a major role. It was owned by Jan Bailey and edited by John W. Lewis Jr.

Distribution was through both street sellers who were usually children who kept a portion of the sales money, subscriptions and through retail outlets. The paper’s goal was 24 issues per year, but publication varied between two and four weeks.

Black Unity newsletter at U.S. Agriculture Dept.: 1971-75 by Washington Area Spark

Black Unity newsletter at U.S. Agriculture Dept.: 1971-75

Black Unity was the newsletter of the Agriculture Task Force Against Racial Discrimination (ATFARD) 1971-75. ATFARD was an affiliate of the umbrella group in the Washington, D.C. area Government Employees United Against Racial Discrimination (GUARD).

ATFARD acted as an advocacy group of rank-and-file employees at the Department of Agriculture (both Washington, D.C. and Beltsville, MD), held occasional protests, sponsored speakers, represented employees in discrimination complaints, published a newsletter that also built solidarity with other GUARD affiliates, weighed in on contemporary issues, urged participation in African Liberation Day (1972-73) and the Children’s March Against Hunger (1972), and published Black History articles, among other activities.

The umbrella group GUARD was active at upwards of two dozen departments and agencies, including Health, Education & Welfare, Library of Congress, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, National Institutes of Health, Commerce Department, and the District of Columbia Government. GUARD was headed for a time by Reginal Booker, the anti-freeway activist leader.

A February 1973 history published by the ATFARD reads:

“On April 17, 1971, in the People's cafeteria located in the 5th wing on the 6th floor, a rally was held to get the attention of Black employees of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The main issue was and still is racial discriminatory practices in hiring and promoting policies of the Department.

“Guest speakers at the rally included John Gibson, Urban League, Len Ball, Urban League and Reggie booker, former Chairman of GUARD (Government Employees United Against Racial Discrimination). These truly Black and skillful speakers strove to enlighten the Black people of Agriculture of their mission--The mission to bring our people together as one and to deal with and get on the case of racial
discriminatory practices in the Department of Agriculture.

“As a result, concerned employees met at All Souls Unitarian Church the following Thursday and formed the Agriculture Task Force Against Racial Discrimination. To date, ATFARD has grown department-wide and has strengthened immensely.

“It publishes a monthly newsletter, Black Unity, which keeps the
employees well informed. Goals include:

1.To exert maximum community pressure to attract racial segregation and discrimination in the Department of Agriculture.
2.To become the Department's "EEO Conscience", speaking out against injustices to Blacks and other minorities, using radio, television and other means of mass communication. To increase the hiring and promotion of Blacks and other minorities in the Department of Agriculture.
3.To encourage Black employees, as individuals and as groups, to file complaints and to develop a pool of persons willing to represent them during the complaint process.
4.To provide a forum where the rank-and-file Agricultural Workers can express their determination to protest discrimination, using whatever means necessary.”

Original copies of Black Unity are held at the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library, Special Collections.

Let's Make America Great Again (Again) Again 🇺🇸 Ronald Reagan 1980

Make America Great Again (MAGA) is an American political slogan and movement. The phrase “Let's Make America Great Again” was used in Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign. At the time the United States was suffering from a worsening economy at home marked by stagflation. Using the country's economic distress as a springboard for his campaign, Reagan used the slogan to stir a sense of patriotism among the electorate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAGA

“The blowout victory of Donald Trump and the Republican party on Tuesday night will lead to major changes in important policy areas, from immigration to Ukraine. But the significance of the election extends way beyond these specific issues, and represents a decisive rejection by American voters of liberalism and the particular way that the understanding of a “free society” has evolved since the 1980s.”

“I think we should just restart England... We'll pick Hadrian's Wall up and just push it down south, slam it down around Nottingham” --Sam Fender #HeadNorth

As Fender’s music is often so political, I was curious to find out what he thinks needs to happen to reverse the region’s fortunes. Would he support, say, the Northern Independence Movement?

“That is the f*cking greatest idea I’ve ever heard,” he says. “How would we make money? Export Greggs? I think we should just restart England. We should go back to the old Roman idea, rebrand as ‘Bernicia’ from Sheffield upwards, and become a new country, f*ck off London. We’ll pick Hadrian’s Wall up and just push it down south, slam it down around Nottingham.” --Sam Fender

The Northern Independence Party (NIP) is a minor secessionist and democratic socialist party that seeks to make the region of Northern England an independent nation, under the name of Northumbria, after the medieval kingdom of the same name. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Independence_Party

War is the third studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Steve Lillywhite, and was released on 28 February 1983 on Island Records. The album is regarded as U2's first overtly political album, in part because of songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day, as well as the title, which stems from the band's perception of the world at the time; lead vocalist Bono stated that "war seemed to be the motif for 1982."

The Grade II Listed Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, in Parliament Square in Westminster an area of Central London and a city itself.

Financing for the statue was by public donations and through sponsorships. This was supported by the work of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, which was set up by Meghnad Desai, Baron Desai, as well as a special advisory panel created by the Government.

Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahātmā (from Sanskrit 'great-souled, venerable'), first applied to him in South Africa in 1914, is now used throughout the world.

93% of The Black Panther posted on Spark (Part II): 1966-76

Volumes 11-16 (See Part I for Volumes 1-10)

Spark now has 430 issues of The Black Panther newspaper posted online from its 1967 Oakland, CA origins through the height of the organization 1968-70 and through its decline up until 1976. We don’t have any of the remaining issues of its publication from November 1976 up through September 1980 demise. However, as of March 5, 2024, it is the most compete collection on the Internet.

The Black Panther the official organ of the Black Panther Party and was published from 1967 to 1980. The newspaper was most popular from 1968-1972, and during this time sold a hundred thousand copies a week.

The Panthers initiated community service programs in the black community such as free breakfast for children, free clothing, pre-school classes, and organizing buses for visitors to prisoners. They also were strident defenders of the black community against police violence and advocated armed self-defense.

A local Panther chapter was established in 1970 with a community center at 1932 17th Street NW and an office/residence at 2327 18th Street NW. In 1971, The District Panthers were immediately hit with police harassment and a number of arrests.

They were also charged by the national office with preparing for the November 1970 Revolutionary Peoples Constitutional Convention. Fending off police harassment, the RPCC along with newspaper sales consumed the local group for its first year.
The D.C. Panthers set up a free bus program for those who wished to visit their kin at Lorton Prison and set up an Angela Davis People's Free Food Program food bank operating out of the community center on 17th street.

By 1972, the DC Panthers made their move from Northwest to Anacostia and set up a People's Free Health Clinic in the basement of the Johenning Baptist Center at 4025 9th Street SE (near Southern Avenue). Later in the year free rides for the elderly were arranged to the bank on the first of the month.

Chapters of the Panthers across the country were violently attacked by police forces, most famously when Chicago Black Panther leaders Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were assassinated by police in 1969.

Much of their national activity was consumed by legal defense of their members in high profile trials of two of their leaders–Huey Newton and Bobby Seale–as well as defenses of chapter members in New York, New Haven, Baltimore, New Orleans and elsewhere.

Many of the most dedicated members were recalled to the Party's Oakland headquarters in the Spring of 1973, but the Washington, D.C. chapter lingered on for another year until the Spring of 1974. One of the chapter's last official acts was to co-sponsor an International Women's Day rally in support of Sheridan Hotel strikers in Lanham MD.

The national party suffered a split in early 1971 that marked a long 10-year decline for the group.

Part I - Volumes 1-10. See Part II for Volumes 11-16

Copies of the newspaper are from our own files, The Wisconsin Historical Society, Freedom Archives, It’s About Time website and the Roz Payne Sixties Archive.
