I ran into this man few weeks back as I was leaving work. I stopped in front of him and said hello. I had some food and I offered it to him. Another stranger in New York City. I don't stop and greet every stranger that I ran too. Maybe I should, but for obvious or not so obvious reasons I try to stay away because they are stranger and some are also strange. I don't want to elaborate on either one. But, this stranger and a homeless man that I met was different. I don't know what drew me to him. Old age, wheelchair, helpless, homeless? I can go on, but I think the first ones are what made me stop and greet him. In talking to him about his life he tells me that he likes to sing and at some point in his live used to sing professionally. I wanted to ask him what happened but I didn't want to open his wounds, so I let it be.
Will you sing something for me? It seemed as if he had been waiting for someone to ask him that question. He tries to sit up on his chair, and sings "I just called to say, I love you". I smile at him and without asking him I join to sing along. He smiles back and we sing briefly this well-known song from Stevie Wonder. I love Stevie Wonder. I remember singing this song growing up everytime I'd hear him on the background. He is a favorite of mine. How can he not?!
I am having a chit-chat with this old man that life has thrown him in the streets. Passer's by give me strange looks but I don't mind. Each to his own, right. I want to have a longer conversation but I am on a time crunch. I do have to be somewhere and I apologize to him for leaving abruptly. Mostly, I feel bad for not being able to give him something. I am not an advocate of giving money to strangers or homeless persons, but this one touched my heart. I look into my bag to find my wallet. I open my wallet and there's only few coins. He looks at me and says "young lady, be careful". We live in this amazing city yet it's filled with so much uncertainty and disgust from human behavior. I look at him and all I give back is a guilty smile. I bid him goodbye and say to him that I'll meet him again...
