JR Hakata City Christmas / Holiday Illumination, Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan

Fukuoka City / Hakata Station area is the business hub of Kyushu, Japan. We happened to be in the area over the Christmas / New Year time luckily, and they had a beautiful illumination at the train station.

This is where our Kyushu trip started.

From Hakata Station, we took a bus to the famous Nakasu night vendors, walked through the neon signs of Fukuoka City. While having grown up in even busier city of Tokyo, Fukuoka certainly had its catch with faint flavors from influence from Korea & China. Fukuoka / Kurume area is also where now the world-famous Tonkotsu Ramen came from. And you shouldn't forget shochu when you are in Kyushu! Ah, it was one hell of a trip in Kyushu....

熊本市 健軍町行き Kumamoto Night Out, Kyushu, Japan

健軍町商店街について

www.piacres.net/history.html

One of the last days in our Kyushu trip, here comes Kumamoto. Unfortunately Kumamoto became a lot more famous after the recent earthquakes they had, and I wonder some places are still around or not.

We just got to send one night and less than a day total - but the night out was fun. They are famous for horse meat in this prefecture, but we enjoyed standard izakaya culture with shochu (hard white alcohol from Kyushu area of Japan), then completed the night with a bowl of ramen from a famous Kumamoto ramen (thick noodles, tonkotsu & chicken base broth, often topped with fried garlic) at Ten Gai Ten Ramen. Too bad we couldn't spend more time there, the Kumamoto Castle we saw on the following day looked stunning.

Night Out in Miyazaki, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan by takasphoto.com

Night Out in Miyazaki, Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan

Miyazaki isn't a sort of city that would appear on your Travel Guide to Japan. It's rather a city that's middle-sized and perhaps most people there are just residents of this city. Miyazaki prefecture is sometimes well-known for its warm mild climate; hence having sports teams camping. However the city? There really aren't much talked about.

However when you travel, you always know that in this kind of underrated cities there's hidden fun. We walked around as we feel like, went into a few places to dine Miyazaki's local food like "Momo Yaki (chicken chopped roughly and grilled with super high charcoal heat), then found a sake bar run by a very nice old gentleman who quit being a salaryman in Fukuoka. He had excellent selections of sake and the lady who was waiting the customers were just so friendly and welcoming that we had a chat even after we paid the bill.

You always know that most touristy cities often are so sick of people visiting, eating the same things, acting the same, and never meet again. Meanwhile MIyazaki city ended up being a city we will always remember.

Halong Bay Cruise, Vietnam by takasphoto.com

Halong Bay Cruise, Vietnam

So we took a cruise in the famous UNESCO Heritage Halong Bay. That is pretty much the only way to discover this wander of the world - well, at least in two days and one night.

Vietnam is known for its affordable pricing for many things from trasportation to food, but this cruise was a bit of an exception. And unfortunately the weather never cleared out after the whole trip. However on the second day the weather was somewhat better, sometimes we saw the sun coming out.

The cruise itself was really fantastic - full of peaceful retired people from all over the world. We thoroughly enjoyed its programme from morning tai chi session (obviously all cruises do that) to cooking class. They took us to a cave and a floating village where people actually live above water.

I know it's touristy, but food was very good, and we enjoyed the different exceitment from fast-paced Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city here. We had a wonderful experience overall.

Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, USA

Palace of Fine Arts is one of the most historically critical buildings in San Francisco, located in Marina District near Presidio. The historic rotunda is lit beautifully with tranditional light source high pressure sodium floodlights, and the contrast with the blue sky was astonishing that day altough it started out to be another foggy day in San Francisco.

Special thanks to Dr. Joseph Kaplan for this photo for the field trip to shoot photos of San Francisco nightviews together.

Our secret gataway at Hyotan Onsen - it was the only place we could book at the very last minute as "Private Onsen All for Ourselves" sort of experience. It was a quite catchy nice place although we just had to take a bath very late night!
