The castle is a reconstruction of the small pleasure castle Gyldenlund, which the Danish royal house took over in 1715. The then Crown Prince Christian, the later Christian 6th, gave the area to his sister, Princess Charlotte Amalie, in 1730. She rebuilds the castle and names it Charlottenlund.
Unlike other royal gardens in the era of absolute power, Charlottenlund Castle Garden is not only for the royal family. Dyrehaven and Charlottenlund are alternately fashionable as destinations for Copenhageners' Sunday outings up through the 1800s. For a number of years from around 1815, it is Charlottenlund who is in. Throughout the summer season, there are tents with singing and music in the castle garden.
The garden was originally laid out in the Baroque style, but in 1880-81, like most other royal gardens at the time, it was converted from a Baroque garden to a romantic landscape garden in the English style. At the same time, the castle is rebuilt and expanded with, among other things, the characteristic copper dome.
