Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) electric multiple unit #26 brings up the rear of a South Shore Line train.
The signal box states that this is Continental Can Crossing. Continental Can is long-gone. The road is no longer known as Continental Can Road here. It's crossing on the parallel Norfolk Southern/Conrail Chicago Line was removed many years ago (although its crossing gates remained in situ for many years after, which was a great alert for railfans).
The reconstructed platform at the Ogden Dunes South Shore Line station. The gantlet tracks allow freight trains allow freight trains to pass the high-level platform. Notice the Chicago Bears fans waiting. The South Shore stops near Soldier Field. The first Sunday morning westbound train is normally 2 to 4 cars but on Bears' game days it swells to eight cars. When the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis, Northern Indiana football fans remained loyal to the Bears.
A new extension of the South Shore Line, The West Lake Corridor Project, is seen at Hammond. It will connect Munster and Dyer, IN with Hammond, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois. It will use, in part, the former route of the Monon Railroad, which had been converted into a rail-trail. The relocated bike path is seen to the left of the new rail line. So we have here a rails-to-trails-to-rails scene here with the new trail adjacent.
