In Pakbeng at sunset time
Pakbeng "is a small village in Laos, on the Mekong River about halfway between the Thai border at Huay Xai and Luang Prabang, Laos." Anyone who has traveled this route on a slow boat knows the place, because you have to spend a night there.
When I took this photo in 2004, the village's only road had not yet been paved, and electricity was produced by noisy diesel generators that were shut down at night. But the children there seemed anything but unhappy.
