A couple of male Ruffs, Philomachus pugnax, in dispute at a lek. 14 May 2025. Liminka Bay, Finland.
The bird with the darker plumage is an “independent”, which are the dominant birds. The other, with a white ruff, is a “satellite”, which are the subservient interlopers and on this occasion won the skirmish.
