Sneltramlijn 1

The first few weeks of the 'new' LRT tramline 1 to Osdorp. Tram line 17 turned around at the Surinameplein and the infrastructural works were not quite finished yet here. Note the use of timber planks to fill the gap between the tramstop and track work. The 699 on the left had a temporary stop short of the open work causing operational delays here. After works were finished tramline 1 would stop some 50 meters further west. © Henk Graalman 18-10-71 2788

Puinhoop op de Dam

Civil works in progress in 1977. This was an almighty mess. These days safe work practices are somewhat over the top, however above chaos was definitely unsafe for other roadusers and workers.

Jammer dan

More road works, and again the 715 prominent in view. Randomly parked cars did not bother the road crew, in fact, cars were blocked in for quite a while with little recourse. Way to go methinks.

Amsterdam: The only way is left

Going right would not be a sensible act this time...
Renewal of tramtracks after only three years I have been taking practically similar pictures at this scene.

Tram track work

In 1975 many infrastructural works took place to facilitate the construction of the underground.
Noteworthy is that this workplace is totally open without barriers, unthinkable these days.

Picture of the old tramroute 1, several months before route number 1 was Amsterdam's first modern tramroute to the outskirts of Amsterdam: Osdorp.
Beijnes built modern 1950s 2G tramtype soon would be renumbered 879 after the addition of a middle section, transferring it to a double articulated tram.

Stapvoets rijden / Easy going

The driver of GVB tram 2100 is carefully guiding his vehicle through the 'open work' area on the Admiraal de Ruyterweg. Here we see the transition of newly laid and old tramtracks (in front).
The lack of parked cars and fences being placed on both sides of the tramway does remind us of the famous "Blue Tram" era, the NZH Interurban trams between Amsterdam, Haarlem and Zandvoort (1000mm gauge) . They disappeared in 1957. GVB re-installed 1435mm gauge tram back in 1982.
