In the past when horses were still used as transport, in some parts of the Netherlands there was a shortage of hay. On the poor and dry sandy soils it was impossible to grow enough grass for the horses. In some parts of the Netherlands, for a example here. a solution was developed by creating 'Vloeiweiden': meadows which were irregated during winter by baserich water from the river Maas. Nowadays these grasslands are relics, with a particular composition of plantspecies which are nowhere to be seen in the Netherlands.
