Had another best day ever yesterday. Alta got about two-and-a-half-feet of snow in just over 24 hours and we woke up to clear skies. The snow was was so good - it was an absolute dream of a powder day!

I'm an action photographer with a landscape photography background. In the winter, I spend a lot of time lining things up - foregrounds and backgrounds, weather, athletes, etc. This photo is something I saw a couple of months ago and started watching for conditions to line up. I'm grateful people appreciate what I do and I get to follow my obsessions.
An Alta ski patroller leaves a trail of cold smoke after doing avalanche control in Alta's Devil's Castle zone.

Winter went from zero to hero in Utah. Last Saturday was our second in a row with over 20 inches of snow in 24 hours. The skiing has been amazing.

My wife and I have skied every Christmas since we met. The last couple of years Christmas has been dry. So it was nice to ski powder on Christmas again, even if it was only a few inches. We've had a dry start this season so any snow is good. And it looks like we've turned the corner with a huge storm cycle just starting.

And so it begins. I started my winter job as a marketing photographer at Alta Ski Area on Saturday. This is my tenth season taking pictures there. We had a solid first weekend with 6 inches of fresh snow overnight for a nice warm-up powder day on Sunday. I took this of my colleague Adam on our first run, Sunday morning. I hope you like ski and snow photos because for the next few months that's what I'm going to be sharing.

Less than 100 days until we ski again. This was last February on a deep, cold mid-week powder day.

Technically it might be spring but you wouldn't know that from conditions in the Utah mountains right now. We had just under two feet of snow at Alta on Sunday and it hasn't quit yet, this week. This is pro skier Julian Carr at Alta on Sunday. The storm overproduced, and we had faceshots all day long.
Today is the last day of winter so here's one from back in mid-January. We waited two hours for a rope drop and over two feet of unskied powder. I don't know who this skier is but I love the shadows and curves in this photo. That was a great day. And even though the calendar may say winter is over, there's a storm forecast for this weekend. We're not done yet.

I fought with the composition on this one for a few days. I really wish the turn had happened a little later and closer to the center of the peak. But this was an (sort of) unplanned photo and it's lucky I got it at all. I was set up for photos of skiers in the sunlit snow closer to me and that skier came in hot and unexpected, blowing up that plume of powder in the sunlight. I really love it and now I have to figure out how to get a better one. Such is my burden as a ski photographer 😄

Last Sunday was my best day this winter. We had clear blue skies and temps in the single digits - coldsmoke powder skiing conditions. I got through a gate before the public and got this fantastic photo of two buddies skiing almost two feet of untouched powder just after the resort opened. Not only did I get some great photos, it was the best snow I've skied this winter.
Ski season is almost here. I actually did two days of photography at Alta last week even though they aren't open yet. I have a hard time making the transition to skiing but I've been up in the mountains and looking through ski photos and I'm starting to get excited. This is one of my favorite people to ski and take photos with, athlete Jennie Symons. She has so much power and always seems to be skiing on the ragged edge of control. It's super fun to take pictures of her skiing.
Alta has had over 550 inches of snow this season and it's dumping up there again, today. I'm taking a much-needed rest day after three great days of skiing. Here's Alta athlete, Kalen Griffin, dropping into a steep line in Alta's Westward Ho area a few days ago. I'm looking forward to more pow skiing and powder photos later this week.
Yesterday was a near-perfect deep powder day. I've been waiting for a day like this, all winter. We got an early gate opening after about two feet of snow accumulation and Alta athlete, Kalen Griffin, nailed this turn for me with the cliffs of East Baldy in the background. There's nothing better than getting first tracks on a deep bluebird powder day.
After a two week break, I got back on the snow last weekend. Saturday was a bluebird powder day and I hustled up a sidestep to be first in on one of my favorite Alta powder zones. I got some really nice, deep turns and a whole lot of great photos, including this long powder freight train shot. It was Alta's Photo-of-the-Day on Saturday. I put a little more time into the processing today to squeeze some more detail out of it.
