Adverts telling the public ‘You lock up. We lock’em up’ are now travelling the roads of Bedfordshire to ensure everyone knows burglary is falling but that we must pull together to keep it that way.
The images of a locked door handle and handcuffs combined with the fact that burglary offences have fallen by 18% have been on show across the bus network since April 1, and are designed to remind people to lock up and look after the things they care about.
An increase in enforcement activity aimed at burglars across the county is also currently underway with those who consider buying or handling stolen goods also being targeted.
“These bus adverts are a very overt way for us to get the message to the public that they can help prevent crime” said Assistant Chief Constable Andrew Richer. “Behind the scenes Bedfordshire Police is going after the people who commit the crime on a daily basis but we must work together. People might think they can quite easily replace things that are stolen but our message is ‘look after the things you care about’. You cannot replace the peace of mind a secure home brings and while there are 500 less victims of burglary in Bedfordshire there are still too many.”
Mr Richer added; “We are not complacent and these figures can be reduced still further. However, sustaining this level of monitoring of offenders is a massive commitment but one Bedfordshire Police believes is worthwhile. We urge the public to join us in this crusade by ensuring their home security is as good as it can be as well passing on information they have about those people committing crime.”
Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire, Olly Martins said: “This bus ad campaign gets the message across that people who set out on a journey of burglary in Bedfordshire will get nowhere in the end except a police cell. Our police force is becoming increasingly skilled at targeting the small number of prolific and persistent offenders who cause so much harm. With the public's help, keeping their property as secure as possible and being the eyes and ears of the police in their communities, we can continue to cut the number of burglary victims in our county".
At Bedfordshire Police our aim is "fighting crime, protecting the public."
