Mixed bag

A few kms on the other side of Broken Hill from the previous pic, but some 27 years earlier, Australian National units 607/958/GM34/GM36 are bound for Port Pirie with another load of lead and zinc ores from the mines at Broken Hill - 10 August 1991.

ALCo 607 was scrapped a few years ago, ALCo 958 is still active on the Steamranger Heritage Tourist Railway, EMD GM34 is little more than a shell, while GM36 awaits some care and attention to get it active again.

Pirie bound ore

Alcos and EMDs combine as Australian National locos 607/958/GM34/GM36 haul no.7255 loaded ore train from Broken Hill to Port Pirie, in the vicinity of Thackaringa, NSW, on 10 August 1991.

ALCo Model DL541 loco no.607 takes the northern leg of the triangle at Dry Creek with a trip working (carrying barley loaded at Mallala) from Dry Creek North yard to the silos at Port Flat on 23 August 1998.

607 (originally 600) was one of seven DL541s built under licence by A E Goodwin in Sydney and was delivered to the South Australian Railways in 1965 for use on the converted standard gauge link between Broken Hill and Port Pirie.

Ownership transferred to Australian National Railways in 1978 and on privatisation of AN to Australia Southern Railroad in November 1997. Four of the class were converted to slugs in 1994 in an Ill fated project which saw them see very little use after that.

The remaining three locomotives soldiered on changing ownership on at least two occasions. With a countrywide surplus of motive power they have seen little use in the last couple of years and 607 in fact sits derelict at Islington workshops in Adelaide.

Bute Ballast

On 9 April 1992, Australian National's 600 class ALCos 607/602 creep along the dual gauge track between Snowtown and Wallaroo with empty ballast hoppers for loading. The line had already been closed to regular traffic, but ballast trains ran for a couple of years on the standard gauge to a small quarry near Bute.
