Marginal traffic

Yongala was the eastern extremity of the South Australian mainline grain network, and on 14 February 1997 Australian National ALCos small and large, 847/603 prepare for the loading of a short rake of hoppers that had originated from Port Pirie..

Railing of grain from here ended a year or two later (see additional comment below), with grain from the silos being roaded to Jamestown or direct to the port. From what I can make out the silos are no longer used at all.

847/706 on Pinnaroo diversion

Uploaded twenty years on to the day, Australian National ALCos 847/706 are on the Victorian side of the border near Panitya on 22 April 1995 with 6AM2 freight from Melbourne to Adelaide.

For two weeks, a return pair of Adelaide to Melbourne freights were diverted over the lightly trafficked Tailem Bend - Pinnaroo - Ouyen broad gauge route while the main corridor was being converted to standard gauge. Special dispensation was given for AN power working through to Ouyen over the Victorian network.

Other freights were diverted via Parkes and Broken Hill and the first standard gauge freight from Melbourne to Adelaide ran on 20 May 1995.
