Air Vent Inhabitants by Ranveig Marie Photography

Air Vent Inhabitants

A nice memory from some years ago- when we stayed some days in an apartment on a farm in Hardanger, and had a couple of Eurasian nuthatches (Sitta europaea) that nested in the air vent on the barn wall next to our balcony.

They also hunted for insects in the beauitful fruit tree right outside.

(Spettmeis in Norwegian)

Check out more beautiful photo of them in the tree as well, in the links below the line!

Weddings ♡

I haven't photographed weddings in some years due to my health, but today I will do one that I promised to do long time ago. I am excited in many ways! The weather is perfect and the couple is wonderful.

This is one of the weddings from my archive.

The Early Bumblebee by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Early Bumblebee

An old but nice garden photo of the early bumblebee (Bombus pratorum), on winter heath.

The early bumblebee got its English name from beginning its colony cycle earlier in spring than most other species. These are from April and June.

It is common throughout Norway.

Red-Tailed Bumblebee & Friends by Ranveig Marie Photography

Red-Tailed Bumblebee & Friends

A red-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lapidarius) on lesser knapweed (Centaurea nigra) in our neighbourhood.

You can also see a green lacewing larvae by the flower and aphids below it.

The red-tailed bumblebee is common in gardens and parks. Nests are large and are found underground, often containing around 300 workers.

Both females (queens and workers) and males have red tails. The queen is much larger. Males have additional yellow hair and banding, and are out later in summer towards the end of a nest’s life.

Now I will go out to look for some more insects to photograph.

Siskins & Seeds by Ranveig Marie Photography

Siskins & Seeds

I have had many nice bird and insect encounters in the sunshine today, both in the forest and by an acquaintance's cabin close to the mountains.

I have photographed many beautiful Eurasian siskins (Spinus spinus) like this one, by a feeder at the cabin. (The male is yellow, the female is brighter.)

There were also many chicks of different species, like a cute little Eurasian bullfinch (dompap in Norwegian). But the greatest thing was to photograph a common redstart couple (rødstjert) for the first time, feeding their 7 chicks. I really look forward to show them later on.

Common Carder Bees by Ranveig Marie Photography

Common Carder Bees

One of several common carder bees (Bombus pascuorum) I photographed one day many years ago, in my parents' garden. This one is sitting on a devil's-bit. They were also sitting on lavender and brown knapweed.

This bumblebee species is present in most of Europe in a wide variety of habitats- such as meadows, pastures, waste ground, ditches and embankments, roads and field margins, as well as gardens and parks in urban areas and forests and forest edges.

Portrait Day

One more photo from beautiful Irene's varied confirmation photo shoot one year ago.

I love taking portraits now and then, although it's not the best for my hips and back this year.

But I still do a few short ones, like the ones I will do today- of families and confirmands together, in my neighbourhood. It will be nice to meet them all.

Sparrows while waiting by Ranveig Marie Photography

Sparrows while waiting

A male house sparrow (Passer domesticus) on our island, from the archive.

As you see, they can be lovely to photograph as well, in the right surroundings.

I have taken some more nice photos of them and their chicks again today, together with great tits (kjøttmeis in Norwegian) with chicks - while waiting to hear and maybe get a glimpse of the rare Sardinian warbler (svarthodesanger) that visits southern Norway.

It was raining at home as we left this morning, but here in the south the weather was lovely. But still, we have only heard and seen many other warblers and other species. (The Sardinian warbler was heard some hours before we arrived.)

And now the rain set in here as well, so I am in the car, waiting for it to stop as forecasted in some time. I hope the rare warbler finally will sing for us after the rain. It would be great to get in on my list.

The Common Scoter by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Common Scoter

I found that I don't have uploaded any common scoter (Melanitta nigra) photos yet, so here is a male from the archive.

We have many common scoters at sea in our neighbourhood during autumn and winter. They breed by lakes in the mountains and in the north. (They also breed over the far north of Europe and the Palearctic, east to Siberia.)

The males are all black and beautiful, with a knob at the base of the bill and yellow coloration around the nostrils. The females are brown with pale cheeks.

Baby Season by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

Baby Season

On my bike ride to and from today's pool workout, I met many bird families with chicks.

First an oystercatcher chick, goldfinch chicks, and then hooded crow chicks close to our house (tjeld-, stillits- og kråkeunger in Norwegian).

In between these, I also met common eiders (Somateria mollissima) with chicks two places in our neighbourhood.

These are from one of the beaches there some years ago, when I was out wading in the heat, and they swam in front of me.

I also added some old nest photos from the island I'm from, to show how they look. I have never seen nests on the island where I live now. But it's good that they manage to hide them well.

The Wren

The charming Eurasian wren (Troglodytes troglodytes), from the archive.

It is Norway's second smallest bird and is numerous all year where I live.

They sing a lot these days, and have a really loud and lovely voice for its size ツ

The Pied Flycatcher by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The Pied Flycatcher

Today I have been out showing some birdwatching friends some nice birds nesting in our town.

We have also heard many more birds than we have seen and photographed, like these European pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca).

The males are black and white, and the females are brown and grey.

They have a very large range and population size. The species occupies areas of many different countries in Europe and northern Africa, also being present in the west Asian portion of Russia. It typically spends winter in tropical Africa.

A content-rich spring is over ♡ by Ranveig Marie Photography

A content-rich spring is over ♡

I know many agree with me that spring goes too fast. But I have made the most of it by spending much time in nature, enjoying it in all the nice weather we have had.

I have found and photographed many more bird species than other years, in all parts of the country.

The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), like this female from southern Norway 2.5 months ago, is one of those I have met and photographed the most, in several parts of the country.

Now the bird migration is pretty much over, and many species have big chicks already.

I ended May yesterday with going home from a wonderful photography trip in eastern Norway, and photographing great spotted woodpecker chicks back home, in addition to lesser spotted woodpeckers (dvergspetter in Norwegian), feeding their younger chicks.

Fieldfares by Ranveig Marie Photography

Fieldfares

A friend and I have driven over the mountains home from eastern Norway today. The weather was lovely all the way, and spring looked so beautiful everywhere.

The bird species we have seen the most in the mountains must be the fieldfare (Turdus pilaris).

It breeds both in the mountains and by the coast, like this one with a chick on our island.

Loving Nuts by Ranveig Marie Photography

Loving Nuts

In Norwegian, we call the Eurasian jay "nut jay" (Garrulus glandarius).

It is one of the bird species we have the most of outside the hide where I am now.

This one is from another hide two months ago.

It was also amazing to see the badgers (grevling in Norwegian) for the very first time last night.

Living on the edge by Ranveig Marie Photography

Living on the edge

When I rode my bike to today's morning workout, a northern lapwing chick (Vanellus vanellus) like this one, walked out in the road in our neighbourhood. And I heard at least one more in the ditch. Often the anxious parents stand in the middle of the road as well.

I hope all drivers are aware, so that this endangered species can carry on.

I have counted at least 10 nesting couples in our neighbourhood this year. There are only a few other couples nesting other places in our municipality. Many other places, they are gone..

Since I didn't have the time to stop today, this photo is from the archive from the same area.

It's raining gannets by Ranveig Marie Photography

It's raining gannets

Northern gannets (Morus bassanus) on Shetland, from the archive.

I stood on top of a cliff where several hundred of them nested. They flew around me everywhere, and their feathers flew all over my face 😅

Today I saw many of them as well, almost 60 in total, passing by our lighthouse on my morning trip.
