Mediterranean Gull during a gentle breeze on the lake
I took several shots of this striking looking gull a few weeks ago. With nothing new to upload, I thought this image ok to edit and post.
A newcomer to my lake, or just a variation of a local Black Headed Gull?
The jury is out on this one - any positive ID will assist the case, and my grateful thanks for all help given :)
Update: My sincere thanks to Natalie M in comments for identifying this suspect as a Mediterranean Gull :)
As is clear from our Gulls' white-grey garb it's still Winter. In Summer their heads are black - hence the English common name and the scientific Greek 'Chroico-' (for 'colored', in this case black). I've added the inset to show the yellow, black-tipped bill of the young birds (until they're two years old). The adults have a red one. And, yes! they sound like they're laughing, 'ridibundus'.
